The Samsung Galaxy S is normally the biggest phone launch of the year, as well as the best selling Android flagship phone of the year. It also sets the standard for all phones being launched for the rest of the year. So it is a bit of a big deal, and therefore there are leaks aplenty.
As always, these are all leaks, so not guaranteed 100%. We will get confirmation of everything when the phone officially launches on the 11th of February.
It has already been reported that the Galaxy S20 has a 120Hz screen, but that it won’t be able to run that at full resolution. We also already know that the S20 Ultra model has a monster spec with a 108MP main camera than a 48MP telephoto lens that is reportedly capable of 10x optical zoom and 100x digital.
The display of each phone will be a WQHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, a 3,200 x 1,440 pixels resolution, but the different sizes will create a different pixel per inch. The Dynamic AMOLED could likely be the Super AMOLED which has integrated touch function: Instead of having a layer that recognizes touch on the top of the screen, the layer is integrated into the screen itself.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and Samsung Exynos 990
As usual, Samsung will be releasing a different spec of the phones in different markets, so for UK users, we will get the Exynos 990 while the US has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset.
Recent leaks show an impressive performance from the Qualcomm equipped variant, but earlier leaks showed the Exynos 990 not fairing quite as well. In reality, they should both provide similar performance. In previous years the Exynos has not done so well with the battery, and time will tell if this remains true, but this year both chipsets are based on the 7nm EUV fabrication process, so they are level pegging this time around.
Camera Specification
The Samsung S20 Ultra is the standout phone this year, with a very different camera spec compared to the smaller models. This will use the 108MP main sensor while the other models will retain the 12MP sensor from previous years.
Similarily it is claimed the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra will have a 48MP 10x optical zoom, which just seems bonkers, nor am I sure how practical it is. It has also been reported that it may end up being 5x zoom, similar to the Huawei P30 Pro.
The more affordable options will use a larger 64MP sensor but this will drop the zoom down to 3x.
It is claimed that all the phones will come with 12GB of RAM.
Samsung has finally started putting big batteries back in their phones, this year the smallest size will be 4000mAH battery, you then get 4500mAH for the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, and finally a massive 5000mAH battery on the Ultra model.
Interestingly the speakers of the phone will be Dolby Atmos Stereo Speakers by AKG. I am not sure how Dolby Atmos can work on a phone.
All the leaks indicate that the names of the phones will have 5G appended to the end of them. There will not be LTE/4G only models from what I can tell, this is because the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 requires a 5G modem, and this is likely true for the Exynos 990 which was announced in conjunction with the Exynos Modem 5123 modem.
