Unboxing
Upon unboxing the Space One Pro, you’re greeted with a sleek and modern design that’s available in two colour options: Jet Black and Cream White. The packaging is minimal and eco-friendly, reflecting Soundcore’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.
One of the standout features of the Space One Pro is its patented FlexiCurve Structure. This design allows the headphones to fold into a compact “donut” shape, reducing their size by approximately 50%. The folding mechanism is smooth and feels robust, inspiring confidence in its longevity.
The headband comprises five segments, each maintaining a 5-8 degree folding angle. This, combined with the three-joint separation in the earcup rotator base, enables the headphones to collapse into a remarkably small form factor. For frequent travellers or those with limited bag space, this feature is a significant advantage over traditional over-ear headphones.
Build quality is impressive, with a mix of plastic and metal components that strike a balance between durability and weight. At 286.2g, the Space One Pro are relatively lightweight for over-ear headphones, contributing to their comfort during extended use.
The earcups are generously sized and padded with memory foam covered in soft protein leather. This design choice not only enhances comfort but also aids in passive noise isolation. The headband is similarly padded, distributing weight evenly across the head.
Physical controls are thoughtfully placed on the earcups. There are buttons for power, volume control, and noise cancellation modes. The buttons have a satisfying click and are easy to locate by touch, which is crucial when wearing the headphones.
Comfort and Fit
Comfort is a crucial factor for over-ear headphones, especially for those intended for long listening sessions or travel. The Space One Pro excels in this area, thanks to its ergonomic design and carefully chosen materials.
The headband’s pressure-relieving design and the slow-rebound foam in the ear cups work together to create a comfortable fit that doesn’t cause fatigue even after hours of use. The clamping force strikes a good balance – secure enough to stay in place during movement but not so tight as to cause discomfort.
One minor quibble is that the earcups might feel a bit warm during extended use in warmer environments. This is a common issue with over-ear designs and not unique to the Space One Pro, but it’s worth noting for those sensitive to heat.
The adjustable headband accommodates a wide range of head sizes, and the rotating earcups ensure a good seal around the ears for most users. This adaptability is crucial not only for comfort but also for maintaining optimal noise cancellation performance.
Soundcore App
The Soundcore app, available for both iOS and Android, is a crucial part of the Space One Pro experience. It offers a range of features that enhance the functionality and customisation options of the headphones.
One of the main features is HearID 2.0, which creates a personalised sound profile based on your hearing. The app guides you through a hearing test, adjusting the EQ to compensate for any hearing deficiencies. This can result in a noticeably improved listening experience tailored to your ears.
For those who prefer manual control, the app offers a customisable EQ with presets for different genres and the ability to create and save your own EQ settings. This level of sound customisation is welcome and allows users to fine-tune the audio to their preferences.
The app also provides control over the ANC modes, allowing users to switch between different presets or create a custom ANC profile. The transparency mode can be adjusted to let in more or less ambient sound as needed.
Other useful features include a “find my headphones” function, firmware updates, and the ability to customise the controls to some extent. The app is generally well-designed and user-friendly, though some users might find the wealth of options a bit overwhelming at first.
One minor drawback is that some features, like the EQ settings, are only accessible through the app. It would be nice to have the option to cycle through EQ presets directly on the headphones for quicker access.
Sound quality
Equipped with 40mm drivers featuring PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) and polyurethane diaphragms, these headphones deliver a well-balanced and detailed audio experience.
The bass response is punchy and controlled, providing depth without overwhelming the mid-range. This is particularly noticeable in tracks with complex low-end elements, where the Space One Pro manages to maintain clarity and separation.
Mid-range frequencies are well-represented, with vocals and instruments coming through clearly. There’s a slight warmth to the mid-range that adds a pleasant character to most genres of music without colouring the sound too heavily.
The high-end is crisp and detailed, offering good clarity on cymbals, high-hats, and other treble-heavy elements. Some users might find the treble a touch bright at higher volumes, but this can be adjusted using the EQ settings in the Soundcore app.
One of the strengths of the Space One Pro is its soundstage. For closed-back headphones, they offer a surprisingly wide and immersive sound field. This adds depth to music and enhances the experience when watching videos or gaming.
The headphones support high-resolution audio codecs, including LDAC, which allows for higher quality Bluetooth streaming on compatible devices. This is a welcome feature for audiophiles who want to make the most of high-resolution audio sources.
Overall, the sound signature of the Space One Pro is versatile, handling various genres with aplomb. Whether you’re listening to bass-heavy electronic music, intricate classical pieces, or vocal-centric pop tracks, these headphones deliver a satisfying listening experience.
Active Noise Cancellation
Soundcore has always offered excellent ANC performance for the price, and the Space One Pro maintains this trend. The headphones feature a four-stage noise-cancelling system that Soundcore claims is their most advanced yet.
The system employs six microphones, including four feedforward mics, to detect and cancel noise in real-time. This setup, combined with an expanded chamber design and the Adaptive ANC 3.0 algorithm, allows the Space One Pro to tackle a wide range of ambient noises effectively.
In practice, the noise cancellation is impressive, particularly for headphones in this price range. Doing my normal synthetic test, playing airplane cabin noise on my Edifier S3000 Pro speakers, the headphones did a good job of filtering out the low-end drum and the mid-range and left some of the highs. The ANC is not quite as good as Bose or Sony, but it is not a significant difference, and you get better bang for your buck with these.
For day-to-day use, higher-frequency sounds, such as voices or keyboard clicks, are also attenuated, though not as dramatically.
The Adaptive ANC 3.0 algorithm adjusts to the user’s wearing condition and movements three times per second, optimising noise cancellation on the fly. This adaptive approach helps maintain consistent performance in various environments.
One notable feature is the ability to choose between different ANC modes through the Soundcore app. Users can select from options like Transport, Indoor, or Outdoor, each tailored to specific environments. There’s also a custom mode where users can fine-tune the level of noise cancellation to their preference.
The transparency mode, which allows ambient sound to pass through, is well-implemented. It’s useful for quick conversations or when awareness of surroundings is necessary, and the transition between ANC and transparency modes is smooth and quick.
Battery Life
Battery life is a crucial factor for wireless headphones, and the Space One Pro doesn’t disappoint in this department. Soundcore claims up to 40 hours of playtime with ANC turned on, and an impressive 60 hours with ANC off. These figures are competitive in the market and should easily cover a week of regular use for most users.
In real-world testing, the battery life comes close to these claims, though as always, actual results may vary depending on volume levels, use of ANC, and other factors. It’s worth noting that using LDAC codec for high-resolution audio will impact battery life more significantly.
One of the standout features is the fast charging capability. Soundcore states that a quick 5-minute charge can provide up to 8 hours of playtime. This is particularly useful for those moments when you’ve forgotten to charge your headphones and need a quick boost before heading out.
The headphones charge via USB-C, which is now the standard for most modern devices. A full charge takes around 2 hours, which is reasonable given the large battery capacity.
The Soundcore app provides a clear battery percentage indicator, which is more helpful than the typical LED indicators found on many headphones. This allows users to plan their charging more effectively.
It’s worth mentioning that the headphones can be used in wired mode with the included 3.5mm audio cable, even when the battery is depleted. This is a useful fallback option for those times when you’ve run out of charge but still want to use the headphones.
Price and Alternative Options
The Soundcore Space One Pro have an RRP of £150.
The older Space One is available from Soundcore for £90, and at the time of writing, you could get them for £63.
The Space Q45 are listed for £150 but have £50 off.
The Soundcore Q30 are listed at £80 but is available for £73.
Overall
Priced at £149.99, the Soundcore Space One Pro occupies a sweet spot in the market. They offer features and performance that often come with a higher price tag, making them an attractive option for those looking for premium features without breaking the bank.
The combination of good sound quality, effective noise cancellation, long battery life, and the unique foldable design provides excellent value for money. The inclusion of high-end features like LDAC support and personalised sound profiles further enhances the value proposition.
While they may not quite match the absolute top-tier performers in areas like noise cancellation or sound quality, the difference is often marginal and may not justify the significant price difference for many users.
For those in the market for a versatile pair of over-ear headphones that offer a great balance of features, performance, and value, the Soundcore Space One Pro should be high on the list of considerations. They prove that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a premium headphone experience, and the unique foldable design might just be the feature that tips the scales for many potential buyers.
