MediaTek is the third player in the mobile system on chip world, they typically are used for budget phones and a lot of Chinese phones, they also have a strong market share with streaming devices like the Fire Stick and processors in TVs such as the Sony AF8.
Their flagship SoC in the Helio P60 which you will find in devices such as the Oppo R15, Realme 1, and Elephone U2.
Mediatek is now following this up with the P70 which uses the 12nm FinFET technology from TSMC and has a Cortex-A73 and Cortex A53 cores in the same 4+4 arrangement and features the same ARM Mali-G72 GPU. What has changed is the clock speeds.
The CPU is now clocked at 2.1GHz for the A73 cores and 2.0GHz for the A53 cores. The GPU is also clocked higher at 900MHz. MediaTek says the higher clock speed results in a 13% increase in performance.
The multi-core APU operates up to 525MHz, and combined with MediaTek NeuroPilot enhancements plus a new, intelligent multi-threading scheduler it delivers 10-30% more AI processing efficiency than the previous P60.
The improvements now allow the P70 to provide 7% better DOU and up to 35% lower power versus the P60.
The chipset also supports up to a single 32MP camera or 24+16MP dual cameras. There is a new high-resolution depth engine that provides a 3x boost in depth-mapping performance. It also has a hardware warping engine for electronic image stabilization (EIS) that saves 23mA per second instead of assigning it to the GPU.
The Helio P70 supports up to 8GB of LPDDR4X and 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM. It also supports eMMC 5.1 and UFS 2.1 storage. Sadly, Bluetooth is still 4.2 (LE).
Overall the improvements with this generation appear to be fractionally incremental, the CPU is just a 5% boost in clock speed over the big core and the GPU has a 12.5% improvement in clock speed.
That doesn’t mean this is a bad chip, and MediaTek are not claiming the revolutionary advancements you might see int he likes of the Kirin 980
