[Update 21-07-2020] MediaTek have now made the Dimensity 720 official. Details are a little thin at the moment, but this is a brand new chipset, rather than a tweaked existing design.
The Dimensity 720 is based on the 7nm fabrication process featuring an integrated 5G modem, and MediaTek’s UltraSave technology, leveraging both network and content awareness intelligence and operating mode in real-time.
Following on from the previous Geekbench leaks, it is confirmed that this is using two Arm Cortex-A76 big cores operating at 2GHz, with the remaining cores being Cortex A55. It is then equipped with a Arm Mali G57 class GPU, fast LPDDR4X memory and universal flash storage (UFS) 2.2.
This will also support 90Hz displays, MiraVision HDR10+ and support for up to 64MP or 20+16MP dual cameras.
I will update this post with a more details specification when available.

I had previously reported that the MediaTek Dimensity 720 was set to launch soon, after I found references of it on the MediaTek 5G page.
Digital Chat Station on Twitter & Weibo later revealed the new OPPO A72 which is set to launch soon, revealing that it uses the MediaTek MT6853V and also claimed that the chipset would be named the Dimensity 720 (but with uncertainty).
Previous specification speculation
With sources revealing the specification I had speculated three possible options for the new chipset:
- Same silicon as the Dimensity 800 but cut down (similar to the upgraded 820)
- Brand new design using Arm Cortex A77 similar to the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 690
- Refreshed existing design such as the Helio G90t
Refreshing the MediaTek Helio G90t felt like the least likely option to me, with it being developed on the 12nm fabrication process and MediaTek using integrated 5G modems on their chipsets, making it harder to just stick one on.
Geekbench Benchmark Listing and comparison
It now looks like I may be wrong, a new Geekbench listing reveals that the MT6853 on the OPPO A72 shows almost the same benchmark scores as the Helio G90T.
Importantly, it is the multi-core of the Dimensity 720 score which is similar. Both the Helio G90T and Dimensity 800 use Arm Cortex A76 cores running at 2.0Ghz and both chipsets score similar single-core results.
However, the Helio G90T only has two A76 cores vs four of the Dimensity 800 and therefore receives a multi-core result around 10% lower.
It is, of course, possible MediaTek have made changes elsewhere, they may have kept the Dimensity 800 design, and lowered the frequencies of the Cortex-A55 cores, though I am not sure how much this would affect the multi-core result.
MediaTek Dimensity 720 Geekbench Benchmark Listing & Comparison

OPPO A72 - MediaTek Dimensity 720 | 513 | 1659 |
Realme 6 Pro - SD720G | 568 | 1643 |
Realme X2 - SD730G | 546 | 1729 |
Realme 6 - Helio G90T | 516 | 1650 |
GPU and fabrication process upgrade
Some earlier leaks regarding the code for PDYM20, which is the OPPO A72, indicate that it had an Arm Mali-G57 GPU, this would be an upgrade from the Mali-G56 found on the Helio G90T.
This has now been confirmed as the Arm Mali-G57 MC3 for the GPU and 7nm for the fabrication process.
In comparison to the 800-series this is 25% less than the Dimensity 800 with 4 cores and 40% less than the Dimensity 820 with 5 cores.

OPPO A72 Specification
The OPPO A72 has show up multiple times on various websites giving us some key information about the phone.
The phone has a 6.5-inch punch-hole IPS LCD panel that offers Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels).
It is has a 4,040 mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. When it comes to the camera, the A72 5G sports 8MP selfie lens and a 16MP + 8MP + 2MP triple camera module at the back inside a square-shaped camera system. It also features a side-mounted fingerprint reader.
It is believed that the Oppo A72 5G 4GB + 128GB storage variant will cost 1,699 Yuan which works out at around £195.
Overall
As with my previous posts, there is a lot of guessing on my part, the Geekbench results only give us an idea of the specification.
While a little disappointing that it is not something more powerful or a new design such as the Arm Cortex A77, it all comes down to the price point.
The existing MediaTek Helio G90T is one of the highlights of the MediaTek in the past year or so, it is a beast of a chipset for its target price point, outperforming the equivalent Qualcomm chipsets. So an affordable 5G variant of this would still be a good chipset.
