The Hoover 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner is the latest launch from Hoover, and as the name suggests, this is a dedicated vacuum for cleaning your mattress and upholstery.

Apart from the handheld design it differs from the other Hoover models I have recently reviewed as it features a UV light to reduce bacteria, allergens and dust mites.

At £99, it is reasonably priced and more affordable than many of the well-reviewed alternatives.

Features

Hoover HMC5 Review 4

The Hoover HMC5 boasts several features aimed at providing a thorough cleaning experience:

Four Auto Functions

The vacuum offers four main functions: Beat&Roll, Vacuum, UV Light, and Drying. This multi-pronged approach aims to tackle various aspects of mattress cleaning, from surface dust to deeper-seated allergens and moisture.

Beat&Roll

The Beat&Roll function is a key feature of the HMC5. It employs a motorised roller that revolves 4,200 times per minute, using bristles made of soft nylon fibre and rubber. This action is designed to agitate the mattress surface, dislodging embedded dust and debris without causing damage to delicate fabrics.

The high rotation speed should theoretically provide a thorough cleaning action, but the effectiveness may vary depending on the type and condition of the mattress. Users with older or more heavily soiled mattresses might find this feature particularly useful.

Vacuum

While primarily marketed as a mattress cleaner, the HMC5’s vacuum function extends its utility to other upholstered surfaces like cushions and sofas. This versatility adds value to the product, potentially replacing the need for separate upholstery attachments on your main vacuum cleaner.

The suction power, while not specified in the product information, should be adequate for most household dust and pet hair. However, without concrete data on airflow or suction pressure, it’s difficult to compare its performance directly with other handheld vacuums.

UV Light

The inclusion of a UV light is a standout feature of the HMC5. UV light has been shown to be effective in reducing bacteria, allergens, and dust mites, which are common concerns for mattress hygiene.

Hoover has incorporated safety features into the UV function, with built-in sensors ensuring the light only activates when in direct contact with the surface. This prevents accidental exposure and conserves energy. However, the actual effectiveness of the UV treatment in real-world conditions may vary, and users should maintain realistic expectations about its impact on overall mattress cleanliness.

Drying Function

The drying function, which uses 50°C hot air, is an interesting addition to the HMC5’s feature set. By reducing moisture in the mattress, this feature aims to prevent the growth of mould spores, which can be a significant health concern.

However, the effectiveness of this function may be limited by the short duration of typical cleaning sessions. Users with persistent moisture issues in their bedrooms might benefit more from a dedicated dehumidifier in addition to occasional use of the HMC5’s drying function.

Unboxing / Design

Hoover HMC5 Review 2

At 2.2 kg, the HMC5 is relatively lightweight for a corded handheld vacuum. The design appears to prioritise ease of use, with a form factor that should allow for comfortable handling during extended cleaning sessions.

The 5-metre power cord provides a decent range of movement, sufficient for most standard-sized mattresses. However, users with king-sized beds or those planning to clean multiple mattresses in one session might find themselves needing to change power outlets occasionally.

Performance

Suction Power

The vacuum function of the HMC5 performs well on most surfaces. It effectively picks up visible dust, hair, and small debris from mattresses and upholstery. However, without official airflow or suction pressure measurements, it’s challenging to quantify its performance against other handheld vacuums.

When I used it on my mattress, I was shocked at the amount of dust it had pulled up, and it performed similarly well on my sofas.

The cyclonic separation system seems to maintain consistent suction throughout the cleaning process, which is a positive point.

Beat&Roll Function

The Beat&Roll feature adds an extra dimension to the cleaning process. The high-speed rotation of the brush effectively agitates the mattress surface, dislodging dust and debris that might be missed by suction alone. This is particularly noticeable on older mattresses or those that haven’t been deep-cleaned in a while.

UV Light

The UV light function is a unique selling point of the HMC5, but its effectiveness is harder to quantify in a home setting. While UV light has been proven to reduce bacteria and dust mites in laboratory conditions, the real-world impact during a typical cleaning session may be less dramatic.

The safety features preventing accidental UV exposure work well, with the light only activating when the device is pressed against a surface. This is a crucial safety feature, especially in households with children or pets.

Drying Function

The hot air drying function is an interesting addition, but its practical benefits may be limited. The 50°C air can help to reduce surface moisture, potentially discouraging mould growth. The Hoover shows a humidity level, which is reduced as you use it, but it is hard to know how effective this is for deeply embedded moisture or in highly humid environments.

Dust Sensor

The dust sensor, which changes from red to green to indicate a clean surface, is a helpful feature for ensuring thorough cleaning.

Ease of Use

At 2.2 kg, the HMC5 is light enough for most users to manoeuvre comfortably. The 5-metre cord provides decent reach, though users with larger beds or multiple mattresses to clean may need to switch outlets.

The transparent dust bin makes it easy to see when emptying is required, and the process of emptying and cleaning the bin is straightforward.

Filtration

While Hoover doesn’t specify the filtration system in detail, the cyclonic separation appears to do a good job of keeping fine dust from escaping back into the air. However, those with severe allergies or asthma might prefer a device with a specified HEPA filtration system.

Overall, the performance of the Hoover HMC5 is excellent for its intended purpose. It provides a more thorough cleaning than a standard vacuum attachment, thanks to its specialised functions.

Alternative Options

As for alternative options, most cordless stick vacuums work well as a mattress vacuum, and many include attachments designed for this. For example, Hoover has various models that come with a Pet brush head that is designed to clean upholstery.

The Tineco Carpet One Pro Smart Carpet Cleaner has a hose attachment for wet/dry upholstery cleaning.

The incredibly expensive Vorwerk Kobold VK200 has a wide range of accessories, including a good-quality upholstery brush.

There are a few products that directly compete with the Hoover UV Mattress Vacuum.

I have previously reviewed the excellent Jimmy H9 Pro, and they have multiple bed vacuum cleaners which feature UV sterilisation, including:

The VonHaus Handheld Mattress Vacuum Cleaner is the cheapest, reasonably well-reviewed option I can find with a price of £45

Verdict

The Hoover HMC5 is an excellent choice for those seeking a dedicated mattress cleaning solution without breaking the bank. Its multi-functional approach provides a more thorough clean than standard vacuum attachments, potentially improving sleep quality and reducing allergens in the bedroom.

However, potential buyers should weigh their specific needs carefully. Those with severe allergies might prefer a device with a HEPA filtration system. Similarly, users who prioritise whole-house cleaning versatility might find better value in a high-quality cordless stick vacuum with appropriate attachments.

For its intended purpose, the Hoover HMC5 performs well. It offers a more thorough cleaning than standard vacuuming, and its ease of use encourages regular mattress maintenance. The price point is reasonable considering the range of functions, making it an accessible option for many households.

Overall, the Hoover HMC5 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner gets a strong recommendation from me for those looking to improve their mattress cleaning routine. It balances functionality and affordability, providing a specialised tool for an often-overlooked cleaning task.
