The AMD keynote at Computex was mainly focussed on the new  3rd generation Ryzen CPUs, but the company did tease us with their up and coming  Radeon RX 5700 series which will be based on Navi.

The first Navi cards will be the Radeon RX 5700 series, which are launching in July and on an architectural level will offer 25% better performance per clock per core and 50% better power efficiency than AMD’s current-generation Vega architecture.

Not much was shown in terms for performance, but they are showing it off versus NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2070 in Strange Brigade, which tends to favour AMD, so not an accurate comparison across the board. In this demonstration, the AMD card was able to beat the NVIDIA by around 10% and delivering ~100 FPS gaming.

The 25% improvement claims are based on internal testing, taking the geomean of 30 games tested at 3840×2160 with Ultra settings and 4x AA. So again this may not be 100% accurate across the board.

As you might expect with the Ryzen 300 series featuring PCIe 4, the new Radeon RX 5700 will also support it. It is unlikely that this will have a major impact on performance as the older cards don’t get bottlenecked by PCIe 3.0

It is perhaps the power efficiency that will be the biggest improvement. AMD cards are notorious for being power hungry and AMD are claiming 50% increase in performance per watt for Navi.

It is also confirmed that the new cards will be using GDDR6 memory.

The big question about these new cards is how well they are priced, with it ideally coming in lower than the current RTX 2070 pricing.
