I was impressed with the Brainwavz B200 in-ear headphones when I reviewed them back in May this year. This time around I have been reviewing the Brainwavz BLU-100 Bluetooth earphones which are priced at a wallet-friendly £34.50 on Amazon.

The design of the earphones is pretty standard, they are connected via a flat cable with the controls dangling from the right ear. The microUSB plugs directly into the rear of the right earphone. The earphones themselves are an aluminium casing, and they are not massive, obviously larger than wired alternatives.

They come supplied with a decent quality carry case, and more importantly you get a good selection of ear tips, including small medium large and some foam comply tips.

Now, even though the earphones come with a decent selection of tips, I had quite a few issues with the fit. I struggled quite badly to get them to stay in during normal movement and struggled even more with exercise. One possible cause for this could be the earphones section themselves are quite long, so stick quite far out of your ear and I assume have a centre of gravity further away from your ear. I did manage to improve the fit with other spare ear tips, and this could just be me having weird shaped ears. Looking at other online reviews and no one else seems to be having a major issue.

The Blu-100 uses two 8mm dynamic drivers and has an impedance of 30 Ohms and it operates in the frequency range of 20-20,000Hz. Getting a good sound out of in-ear headphones is reliant on getting a good fit with the ear tips so it took a little while for me to get there. Once I had a decent fit I was rewarded with a good quality sound though was quite neutral but I found to have more of a punchy bass than the Brainwavz B200 earphones I previously reviewed. The mids and highs are nice clear and refined, there was no harshness when then volume went up. Combined with the decent level of bass I found these worked well for my gym sessions, and they seem to be well protected for sweat.

Battery life seems to be adequate, I got between 3 and 4 hours from them, less than my Bose Soundsport, but these are smaller and considerably cheaper.

Overall

These are well within the budget range of wireless earphones, if you want cheaper you are stuck with buying from completely unknown brands off Amazon. However, the budget price doesn’t mean you get poor quality sound, the BLU-100 comfortably punched above their weight and in a world where 3.5mm sockets are falling out of fashion, these make a great investment for any new smartphone.
