One of the biggest launches of the year has finally happened, leaving not many flagship phones left to launch for 2019, with Honor and OPPO next week, then hopefully a break for a few months.
As usual with a phone of this calibre, most of the details have been leaked, but now everything is official.
OnePlus traditionally offered a flagship device considerably cheaper than competing brands, often being called the flagship killer. With the launch of the OP7 Pro which starts off at £649 they are entering the premium-priced market. Though as pointed out in my comparison with the S10 and P30 Pro, they are still £200 cheaper.
The normal OnePlus 7 keeps the pricing from the previous generation at just £499, and this phone should be more than enough for your average user with the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
OnePlus 7 Pro
We knew that the OP7 Pro would have 5G, and as expected, this is via a variant of it, which won’t be available just yet, nor do we know how much extra it will cost.
As leaked, the phone has a huge 6.67-inch screen running at 1440×3120 pixel with no notches due to the pop-up selfie camera. It is also the first phone with a 90Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, plus a DisplayMate A+ rating for colour accuracy.
The screen includes a new in-glass fingerprint sensor that is now able to recognise a fingerprint in just 0.24 seconds, compared to 0.4 seconds on the OnePlus 6T. The optical sensor is 36% bigger than its predecessor to improve recognition accuracy.
The OP7 Pro ups the game with the camera, justifying its premium price.
On the back, you have an ultra-wide sensor with 117-degree field of view (top), a standard camera (middle) and a 3x telephoto camera (bottom).
The specs of these are 16MP (f/2.2), 48MP (f/1.6) and 8MP (f/2.4) respectively. The main camera features OIS and EIS, while the telephoto camera has OIS. There’s also PDAF, CAF and laser focusing.
The 48-megapixel standard camera which is a Sony IMX 586 sensor will pixel bin down to 12MP.
A new UltraShot mode, designed in-house by OnePlus engineers, utilises a special HDR+ mode that takes a single photo with four pixels capturing the image at different exposure levels at once, which are then combined for an overall 12-megapixel photo.
For low-light imaging, Nightscape 2.0 now allows handheld night shots to be taken in approximately two seconds.
The phone has a 4000mAh battery with 30W warp charge, but no wireless charging.
RAM and storage options range from 6 to 12GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage.
Gaming
A 10 layer liquid cooling layer allows the OnePlus 7 Pro to remain cool even during the most intense gaming sessions. And how better to share your victories and defeats, than with the new Screen Recorder feature – there is no limit to recordings and you are able to pause and resume at any moment, and even choose the audio source and use the microphone to add live commentary over the top.
Gaming Mode can be taken to the next level with additional pro settings – Fnatic Mode adds new features to gives a competitive advantage, with advanced DND, background restrictions, and network enhancements as the CPU and GPU are optimised to make a gaming beast.
OnePlus 7
If the Pro model is a little too rich fo your blood, then thankfully, OnePlus have kept their sub-£500 model.
This model retains most of the important bits but excludes the fancy stuff. There is no pop-up camera, instead, the 6.41 inch 1080 x 2340 pixel display has a small notch similar to the 6T.
It then has a dual-lens setup that allows you to take exceptional pictures. The main sensor on the OnePlus 7 features Sony’s IMX586, a 48-megapixel, ½ inch super-sized sensor with an aperture of f/1.7, and OIS and EIS. The second camera is 5-megapixel, and the whole camera array is again driven by the powerful new UltraShot engine.
OnePlus 7 Pro 5G
Based on the OnePlus 7 Pro, the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G represented a big design challenge, requiring OnePlus to create new designs for 5G antennae and even redesign the NFC antenna.
Launching exclusively with EE in the UK, and Elisa in Finland, there will be more news coming about pricing and availability of the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G very soon.
