Following the release of the updated Alienware m15 and m17 models, Dell has also announced the refreshed G5 and G7 line-up. I recently reviewed the Dell G5 with a GTX 1060 and found it to be one of the best value gaming laptops on the market, I suspect this year’s model will continue to be a superb buy.
The main upgrade is the introduction of the latest NVIDIA RTX range of GPUs with options starting out with the 2060 through to the 2080. They will also keep producing models with the 1050ti.
The new models bring all the latest tech into the budget gaming laptop range with processors starting with the Intel i5-8300HQ Quad Core and going up to the i7-8750HQ Hex Core.
The G5 from the previous generation didn’t have the best screen in the world, this was likely a way to keep this as a budget gaming PC. However, you can upgrade these models and the base model starts with FHD (1920 x 1080) 220 nits IPS Anti-Glare LED Backlit Display (non-touch) with 60Hz refresh rate but goes up to a UHD (3840 x 2160) 400 nits OLED Display with 60Hz refresh rate. Alternatively, a more appealing option for gamers might be the FHD (1920 x 1080) 300 nits IPS Anti-Glare LED Backlit Display (non-touch) with 144Hz refresh rate
For the G7 the monitor options include FHD (1920 x 1080) 300 nits IPS Anti-Glare LED Backlit Display (non-touch) with 60Hz refresh rate or FHD (1920 x 1080) 300 nits IPS Anti-Glare LED Backlit Display (non-touch) with 144Hz refresh rate. There is no 4K option, at least at launch.
The specification of the two versions is largely the same with the exception of the screen size, dimensions and weight. The G5 has gone up in weight compared to the previous generation and now weighs from 2.77kg compared to the listed 2.61kg of last years model. The G7 now starts at 3.27kg which is quite an increase from the 2.86Kg of the older model. While the G5 is fractionally heavier it is physically smaller both in height, width and depth.
There is an optional 4-zone RGB keyboard which will appease many gamers and Alienware Command Center for convenient control and access to gaming settings.
The G5 and G7 will be available from the 21st of January with prices starting at $999 for the G5 and $1379 for the G7. At the moment there is no word on UK pricing or availability.
