Following on from my foldable e-bikes buying guide, this post covers hybrid and mountain bike styled bikes.

Hybrid & MTB vs Foldable E-Bikes

City bike design

Hybrid and mountain electric bikes are physically larger with bigger wheels than the foldable variety.

Obviously, if you plan to go off-road and use these more for leisure than commuting opting for these larger bikes makes more sense.

However, I think they are also a good option for commuting.

I may be biased as I use a road bike for fitness, but the bigger frame and wheels make for a more comfortable long-distance riding position. As a taller rider, I find that pedalling is more comfortable and it’s easier to ride without using any of the assistance features.

For me, if I was cycling a relatively long distance for a commute directly from home and storage space at home wasn’t an issue, I’d opt for one of these full-sized bikes.

Foldable bikes are obviously ideal if you need to load your bike into a car on taking on public transport. They can also be stored a bit easier at home.

Best Hybrid City & MTB Electric Bikes on Amazon

Over time I will write a few guides, I have already covered foldable bikes on Amazon.

Similar to my last guide, my logic here is that the bikes on Amazon are a bit more affordable while you still retain the customer support of Amazon. There are plenty of great Chinese bikes but if you import a bike from an international site and you have support problems things can get tricky.

When you look for buying guides on Google, many sites recommend big brand names. These will of course be excellent options but if you are looking for an affordable commuting solution to cut down on the rising costs of petrol, spending a couple of grand on an e-bike is likely not on the cards.

ESKUTE Electric City Bike

  • Market place seller
  • 108 reviews – 4.4 out of 5
  • 40 to 60 km (in pedal assistance mode), 25 to 40 km (in pure electric mode)
  • Weight is 26kg
  • 250W brushless gear motor
  • 25km/h

This is one of the best-reviewed options I can find. It is an ideal commuter design that includes both mudguards and a pannier rack. It has a 7 speed Shimano gearset and then 6 different assist levels from 0-5.

ESKUTE Voyager Electric Mountain Bike

  • Market place seller
  • 134 reviews – 4.4 out of 5
  • 40 to 60 km (in pedal assistance mode), 25 to 40 km (in pure electric mode)
  • Weight is 29kg
  • 250W brushless gear motor
  • 25km/h

ESKUTE are obviously a well regarded e-bike band. The Voyager is designed for MTB use, though with the lockable front shocks it should work well for commuting on the road. Included accessories include lights and mudguards and it looks like some users have also fitted third party pannier racks.

BLUEWHEEL BXB75 E Bike

  • Market place seller + £9 delivery
  • 116 reviews – 4.4 out of 5
  • 150km (claimed)
  • Weight is 23kg
  • 250W brushless gear motor
  • 25km/h

This one is a bit more serious for mountain biking. You have a 21 speed Shimano gearset. They claim up to 150km range, though I doubt this is realistic if you use a moderate amount of assist.

You can even pair it up with an app on your phone which will provide you battery and odometer data

Swifty Electric Mountain Bike

  • Amazon Prime
  • 324 reviews – 4.2 out of 5
  • 30 miles / 48km
  • Weight is 26kg
  • 250W brushless gear motor
  • 25km/h

A few mixed reviews on this one but it is one of the more affordable options on Amazon. It looks like you will need to make sure the bike arrives in good condition. You get a 7-speed Shimano gearset and 3 levels of assist.

Hyuhome Electric Bikes

  • Market place seller + £49 delivery
  • 149 reviews – 4.2 out of 5
  • 85km
  • Weight is 22kg
  • 360W brushless gear motor
  • 25km/h

I am not keen on the wheel design but it is reasonably well-reviewed and well priced. You get 21-gears with 5 levels of pure electric and 5 levels of electric assist. You then have an impressive 85km range and it even includes mudguards and a pannier rack making it a versatile option.

Be warned of the high £49 delivery charge

ANCHEER 26″ Electric Bike

  • Amazon Prime
  • 182 reviews – 4.5 out of 5
  • 30 miles / 48km
  • Weight is 30kg
  • 250W brushless gear motor
  • 25km/h

This city bike has some great reviews but the £70 delivery charge is a bit annoying. It has a 6-speed gearset with both pedal assist and full electric. As you’d expect for a city bike, this includes a pannier rack and mud guards.
