I have struggled with insomnia and anxiety for most of my life and have been prescribed a variety of antidepressants over the years, as well as short-term sleep medications. Nothing really worked. Benzodiazepines didn’t touch the side. Mirtazapine worked, but I felt awful on it and gained a lot of weight.

Things improved as I got fit and ate healthy. I was able to get enough sleep to function, but I’d wake up a lot and generally found going to bed stressful because of it.

In recent years, I was diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed Elvanse, which exacerbated my insomnia.

I later became aware that medical cannabis could be prescribed to people with psychiatric conditions if they have tried at least two forms of traditional treatment (I was on 10+). I never used cannabis in my younger years, even when I was abusing alcohol, but I have a liberal mindset, and cannabis is far less harmful than most prescription drugs.

I started with the Xmax V3 Pro, which was superb considering the price, and I was finally able to sleep (reasonably) well. I later upgraded to the Arizer Extreme Q Desktop vaporizer, which I loved, but I found that my usage increased quite a lot with it. During Black Friday, my impulsivity got the better of me, and I bought the universally loved Storz & Bickel Mighty+.

I got it for a great price of just £215 as I qualified for VAT relief as a patient, but is it really worth more than double the price of the Xmax V3 Pro?

Note: I am British and I would normally have used the spelling vaporiser throughout the article, but due to American influence, it seems like most shops and manufacturers use vaporizer, so I decided to stick with that.

Features

The Storz and Bickel Mighty+ is an updated version of the original Mighty dry herb vaporizer. It maintains the vapour quality of its predecessor whilst introducing several new features and improvements.

Key Features and Improvements

  • USB-C Charging: The Mighty+ now utilises USB-C for charging, offering greater convenience and compatibility.
  • Faster Heat-up Time: The device now reaches optimal temperature in 60 seconds or less, thanks to an optimised heater – 180 °C in approx. 60-70 seconds.
  • Ceramic-Coated Chamber: The filling chamber features a ceramic coating, potentially enhancing the flavour of the herbs.
  • Improved Design: New fins have been added to the bottom of the device, allowing it to stand upright when not in use or when connected to a water tool.
  • Temperature Control: Users can select any temperature between 40°C and 210°C, allowing for a customised vaping experience.
  • Supercharge Function: The new USB-C port with “Supercharge” capability can charge the 3300 mAh batteries to 80% in approximately 40 minutes.
  • Pass-through Charging: The Mighty+ can be used while charging, offering additional flexibility.

Heating Technology

The Mighty+ employs a patented heating system that combines conduction and convection methods. This approach aims to heat herbs or concentrates efficiently and evenly without the need for stirring. The hybrid heating system ensures that the herbs are heated both from direct contact with the heating element (conduction) and by hot air passing through them (convection).

This dual heating method results in efficient extraction of active compounds from the herbs, producing consistent and flavourful vapour. The even heating also means that users don’t need to stir their herbs mid-session, which is a common requirement for many other vaporizers.

Temperature Settings

A new temperature control feature has been added to the Mighty+. Users can triple-click the On-Off button to automatically increase the current temperature by 15°C, allowing for quicker temperature adjustments. This feature, known as the Superbooster, is particularly useful for those who like to increase the temperature throughout their session to extract different compounds at various heat levels.

The Mighty+ allows for precise temperature control between 40°C and 210°C. This wide range enables users to customise their vaping experience, as different compounds in herbs vaporise at different temperatures. Lower temperatures tend to produce more flavourful vapour, while higher temperatures can produce denser vapour and potentially stronger effects.

Certification and Warranty

The Mighty+ has received UL certification, making it the first dry herb vaporizer to achieve this safety standard. When purchased from authorised distributors, the device comes with a two-year warranty, which can be extended by an additional year upon registration.

What is the difference between the Mighty Plus Medic vs Mighty Plus?

The primary difference between the Mighty+ Medic and the standard Mighty+ lies in their certification and intended use:

  • Mighty+ Medic: This version is a certified medical device specifically designed for the inhalation of cannabinoids. It has been tested and certified according to the DIN EN 60601 standard, which pertains to the safety of medical electrical equipment.
  • Mighty+: The standard version is tested for safety requirements according to DIN EN 60335, which covers safety for household and similar electrical appliances. It also meets the UL 8139 standard.

While both versions offer the same core functionality and features, the Mighty+ Medic’s medical certification makes it particularly suitable for patients using medical cannabis under a doctor’s supervision. This certification may also make it eligible for insurance coverage or tax deductions in some jurisdictions, though this varies depending on local laws and regulations.

It’s worth noting that despite these differences in certification, the actual performance and user experience of both devices are essentially identical. The choice between the two often comes down to the user’s specific needs and any potential benefits they might gain from using a certified medical device.

Design

Storz and Bickel Mighty Plus Medic Vaporizer Review 2

The device has a robust, industrial aesthetic similar to its predecessor, with a few key improvements that enhance its usability.

The most noticeable design change is the addition of a ceramic-coated filling chamber. This upgrade not only improves the flavour of the vapour but also makes cleaning easier. The ceramic coating is less prone to residue build-up, which means less maintenance for users.

Another significant design improvement is the addition of fins at the base of the device. These fins allow the Mighty+ to stand upright on its own, addressing a common complaint about the original Mighty. This seemingly small change greatly improves the device’s stability when in use or when connected to a water tool.

The Mighty+ Medic’s body is made of high-quality, medical-grade plastics that can withstand high temperatures and regular use. The device feels solid in hand, with a textured grip that prevents slipping. At 14 cm tall and 8 cm wide, it’s larger than many portable vaporizers, but this size allows for better heat dissipation and houses the unit’s powerful batteries.

Its size is also one of its drawbacks. While it’s portable, the Mighty+ Medic is not as pocket-friendly as some smaller vaporizers, especially when compared to my Xmax V3 Pro.

The LED display is clear and easy to read, showing the current and set temperatures. The simple three-button interface (power and two temperature adjustment buttons) makes operation straightforward, even for new users.

The addition of USB-C charging is a welcome design update, making it more convenient to charge the device and allowing for faster charging times. The Supercharge function, which can charge the device to 80% in about 40 minutes, is particularly useful for users who need quick turnaround times between sessions.

One negative is that the batteries are not removable. I doubt this will be a huge problem, and it is common with electronics nowadays, but I had some reassurance that I never needed to worry about degraded batteries with the Xmax V3 Pro.

Performance

To provide some context, I have never smoked cigarettes or joints. While I have tried cannabis a couple of times in my youth, it was a vice I never took up (alcohol was my drug of choice). As a result, I have very sensitive lungs compared to many users, and I have struggled with the harshness of vapour since starting medical cannabis. Lower temperatures help, but I often feel like I am not getting the full effect. Using bubblers has helped a lot, and over a year of being a patient, my lungs have gotten more used to it.

I have found that the Mighty+ Medic’s performance has been excellent and a big upgrade from the Xmax V3 Pro while being more efficient than my Arizer desktop vaporizer, living up to its reputation as one of the best portable vaporizers available. Its hybrid heating system, combining conduction and convection heating, produces consistently high-quality vapour that is both flavourful and potent.

Vapour Quality & Extraction

The vapour produced by the Mighty+ Medic is excellent. The hybrid heating system ensures that herbs are heated evenly, resulting in efficient extraction of active compounds. I found that I didn’t need to stir the bowl to make sure that the flower was fully extracted.

Prior to this, I had been almost exclusively using my Arizer Extreme Q. I love it and settled on using balloons as they help cool down the vapour; I would then run this through a relatively large water bubbler to cool the vapour further. That being said, I found that my usage increased quite a lot using this. Perhaps user error, but I find that desktop vaporizers seem to be a bit more wasteful than portable vaporizers.

With the Mighty+, I struggled with the harshness of the vapour much more than the Arizer, but I found the potency increased and used less flower.

I found the airflow was better than the Xmax, and it seemed less likely to get clogged up and requires less maintenance, but as you expect, the airflow is much more restricted than the Arizer. As a result, I didn’t feel like I could use my big bubbler with this, as there just wasn’t enough airflow. But, I have used a smaller bubbler, which is a bit more convenient in size and provides enough cooling that I can comfortably vape at 185 degrees without having a coughing fit.

The end result was that the flower was much darker when emptying the chamber in comparison to the Arizer.

Heat-up Time and Temperature Control

One of the improvements in the Mighty+ Medic is its faster heat-up time. The device reaches vaping temperature in about 60 seconds, which is significantly quicker than its predecessor. This rapid heat-up time means less waiting and more vaping.

The temperature control is precise and easy to use. The ability to set the temperature anywhere between 40°C and 210°C allows users to customise their experience. Lower temperatures (around 160-180°C) tend to produce more flavourful vapour, while higher temperatures (190-210°C) produce denser vapour and potentially stronger effects.

The new Superbooster feature, which allows users to quickly increase the temperature by 15°C with a triple-click of the power button, is a useful addition for those who like to increase temperature throughout their session.

Battery Life and Charging

The Mighty+ Medic boasts impressive battery life, typically lasting for 6-8 sessions on a single charge. This longevity is particularly noteworthy given the device’s powerful heating system.

The addition of USB-C charging and the Supercharge function are significant improvements. The ability to charge to 80% in about 40 minutes is extremely convenient, especially for those who use their device frequently.

The pass-through charging feature, which allows the device to be used while plugged in, is another plus. This feature ensures that users are never left waiting for their device to charge before they can use it.

Efficiency and Consistency

The Mighty+ Medic is highly efficient in its herb usage. The even heating provided by the hybrid system means that herbs are fully extracted without the need for stirring mid-session. This efficiency can lead to cost savings over time, as users may find they need less material to achieve their desired effects.

Consistency is another strong point of the Mighty+ Medic. It produces reliable results session after session, with minimal variation in vapour quality or potency. This consistency is particularly important for medical users who rely on predictable dosing.

Ease of Use

The Mighty+ Medic is remarkably easy to use. The simple three-button interface and clear LED display make it accessible even for those new to vaporising. The dosing capsules, which come included, add another layer of convenience, allowing users to pre-pack their sessions and swap them out quickly.

Cleaning and maintenance are also straightforward, thanks to the ceramic-coated chamber and the included cleaning brush. Regular light cleaning is usually sufficient to keep the device in good working order.

Due to the low cost of the capsules, I always use the Mighty+ with them as it makes life a bit easier with less maintenance.

While the Mighty+ Medic excels in many areas, as I previously mentioned, it is noting that its airflow is more restricted compared to some desktop vaporizers. This can make it a bit harder to use with large water pipes. Additionally, some users might find the vapour a bit harsh on the lungs compared to vaporizers that offer more extensive cooling options.

Despite these minor drawbacks, the overall performance of the Mighty+ Medic is exceptional. Its combination of vapour quality, efficiency, ease of use, and battery life make it a top choice for both medical and recreational users.

Price and Alternative Options

The Storz & Bickel Mighty+ has an RRP of around £340 (different shops quote different prices) but is consistently available for around £250.

The Mighty Medic+ is available from vapedispensary.co.uk with the RRP listed at £337 and at the time of writing it was £310.

If you are a medical cannabis patient, Vape Dispensary will waive the VAT as this is a medical device, taking this down to £259. During Black Friday, I paid £215.83.

It is worth noting that the Mighty Medic+ is effectively the same as the normal Mighty+, so I personally wouldn’t pay extra for it over the normal model.

The standard Mighty is listed at an RRP of £320 but available for £200, then the Crafty+ sits below this with an RRP of £259 and available for £189. I nearly bought the Crafty+  on Black Friday, but it is reported as having a poor battery.

Then, the most expensive Storz & Bickel  model is the Venty with an RRP of £390 and available at £320

For a long time, it was regarded as the gold standard of vaporizers, but in recent years, the Tinymight 2 appears to have taken that crown, which typically retails for around £300.

The Arizer Solo 3 is a popular option with an RRP of £300 and available for £270.

And, of course, you don’t need to spend hundreds on a vaporizer. I was quite happy with the XMax V3 Pro for a year or so, and this is available for just £85.

Overall

Overall, I love the Storz & Bickel Mighty+, and I am relieved that the premium price was worth it.

I find it a significantly better experience than the XMax V3 Pro. It heats the flower more consistently, doesn’t require stirring, and so far, has been lower maintenance.

The battery life is excellent, and the pass-through charging is a big plus for people vaping at home.

In comparison to my Arizer Extreme Q desktop vaporizer, I find the airflow is more restricted, so it is harder to run through a large bubbler, and it is a bit harsher on my lungs (because it isn’t as easy to cool the vapour), but I find it much more efficient. I’d say my usage has dropped by around 25% to 33%, which over the space of a year is a lot of money when I typically pay £8.50 per gram for the Aurora Pedanios range of products. Subjectively, even with the lower consumption, I feel better medicated and have been sleeping better (though I have also reduced my Elvanse and switched to Soughdough, which is likely a bigger factor).

Overall, if you are a medical cannabis patient, you are likely spending well over £1k+ per year on clinic fees and medication. While it is possible to get a good cheap vaporizer, I think it makes sense to invest in a decent quality premium vape if you plan to be a patient long term, and the Storz & Bickel Mighty+ (medic or not) is one of the best options on the market.

I’d say the only caveats to that are you should consider the price difference between the Storz & Bickel Mighty+ and Tinymight 2, as well as consider if a portable vape is needed at all, as desktop vaporizers have many appealing benefits.

Storz & Bickel Mighty+ Medic Vaporizer Review

Summary

The Storz & Bickel Mighty+ Medic offers a high-quality vaping experience with features tailored for both medical and recreational users. Its robust build, precise temperature control, and smooth vapour make it a reliable choice for those prioritising performance.

For medical cannabis patients, the Medic certification may justify the premium price, particularly if VAT relief applies. However, users should weigh the cost against other capable devices like the Tinymight 2 and Arizer Solo 3.

Ultimately, the Mighty+ delivers excellent performance, and its durability suggests it could last several years, providing value over time. While it may not be the most affordable option, it remains one of the best choices for users seeking reliability and ease of use.
