Yesterday, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced the launch of Matter: the new industry-unifying standard that enables smart devices to work together seamlessly.
Signify, the company behind Philips Hue, has been a partner with the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) from the start.
Therefore, as you’d expect, Philips Hue is now rolling out updates that will enable Matter on the various Hue products.
This is quite exciting news in the world of smart homes as this opens up the potential for seamless integration across brands without the clunkiness of proprietary APIs.
The Philips Hue smart lighting hub that connects and controls all Philips Hue products, is now Matter-certified. Via a software update to the Philips Hue Bridge all existing and new Philips Hue lights and accessories will be Matter compatible – except for the Philips Hue Play HDMI sync box and the dial of the Philips Hue Tap Dial Switch. These devices are not yet supported by the CSA’s Matter current version.
It is a bit disappointing that the Tap Dial is not Matter compatible, as it is a new product and likely popular. But, perhaps because it is new, they have not rolled out the required updates yet.
Like many of these Matter announcements, the rollout isn’t immediate. Philips Hue expects the update to be carried out in Q1 2023. With this update, users will benefit from a simplified connected experience when connecting their Philips Hue system with other Matter compatible smart home devices and apps. Matter offers easier interoperability between supported smart home devices in a reliable and secure manner. Organizing an innovative smart home will be easier than ever before.
After the Matter software update to the Philips Hue Bridge, users will continue to enjoy the wide range of features to personalize their homes with Philips Hue smart lighting, including scenes, automated schedules, advanced entertainment possibilities like sync with Spotify, and more.
All previous settings and personalization in the Philips Hue App will remain after the update to the Philips Hue Bridge. The existing Google and Amazon integrations in the Philips Hue App will also continue to work as-is and be automatically updated with Matter. For Apple HomeKit, users will need to reset to connect again via Matter.
What else is new, is that the Philips Hue integration with Matter compatible devices and apps is open for developers as of November 3 2022 onwards. This means that various smart home device developers who are also developing Matter are able to test the interoperability with the Philips Hue system via Matter by signing up on the Philips Hue Developer Community.
