MediaTek has been on a roll for the last 6-months or so. It started at the end of July with the launch of the Helio G90 series which was then featured in the massively popular Redmi Note 8 Pro. Benchmarks indicated this was as good, if not better than the Snapdragon 730G.

In recent months we have seen three new chipsets launch under the Dimensity name with the 1000, 1000L and 800, all are 5G chipset and they all look amazing offering incredible specs for what should be a lower price point than the Qualcomm equivalent.

Then they announced the Helio G70, which will feature on the Realme C3. This chipset is much less interesting being identical in spec as the older MediaTek P65.

Today sees the launch of the Helio G80, another uninspiring release being basically the same as the G70 but with different clocks.

The Helio G80 SoC is built on the 12nm node and features an octa-core CPU with 2x Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2.0GHz while the other 6x Cortex-A55 cores run at 1.8GHz.

The only difference with the G70 is that the 6x Cortex-A55 cores run just .1Ghz lower at 1.7GHz.

The G80 has a small GPU bump too, using the same Mali-G52 GPU but running at 950MHz vs  820MHz. This is a 16% improvement, so it should have a noticeable change in GPU performance for gaming.

In comparison, the Helio G90T which is used on the Redmi Note 8 Pro has 2×2.05 GHz Cortex-A76 & 6×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 with a Mali-G76 MC4 GPU.

The G80 has many of the other features seen in the other chipsets too, including HyperEngine Game technology and built-in VoW (voice on wakeup). With VoW lowering the power consumption for voice assistance services while the HyperEngine promises smoother gaming and is shared with the G90.

The G70 will be in the Realme C3 launching in India soon. It is expected phones will also launch with the Helio G80 soon.
