Today MediaTek has officially announced their new budget 5G chipset, the Mediatek Dimensity 720.
After identifying the chipset a couple of weeks ago, I have made many speculations about the possible specification, and it looks like most of the guesses were wrong.
7nm Fabrication Process and integration 5G modem
Based on the current press release, which is a bit thin on the ground, this is a brand new piece of silicon. The Dimensity 720 uses the 7nm fabrication process and features an integrated 5G modem, just like the other Dimensity chips.
The specification sheet has some missing details about 5G connectivity that the more powerful Dimensity 800 has, this includes 5G Carrier Aggregation (CA) and 4×4 MIMO. It is stated that it can reach peak download speeds of 2.3Gbps.
Mid-range CPU specification similar to Helio G90t
However, this will now adopt a more mid-range design dropping the 4×4 CPU layout of the other Dimensity chipsets in favour of 2×6. This will consist of two Arm Coretex A76 cores running at 2.0Ghz that are combined with six Arm Coretex A55 cores which be running at 2.0Ghz.
Interestingly, the latest chipset launches from both Qualcomm and Samsung adopt the more modern Arm Cortex A77 design for their Snapdragon 690 and Exynos 880 chipsets. However, this design will likely allow Mediatek Dimensity 720 based phones be the most affordable 5G option on the market.
Arm Mali G57 GPU
It was previously only revealed that the chipset would feature the ARM Mali G57, which is the same class of GPU found in the Mediatek Dimensity 800 and 820. It has now been revealed that this will use 3 cores vs 4 on the 800 and 5 on the 820.
The GPU will support H.264, H.265 / HEVC video encoding, while being able to encode up to 4K @ 30FPS.
For decoding it will support H.264, H.265 / HEVC, VP-9 while being able to play up to 4K @ 30FPS
- Supports LPDDR4X memory (up to 12GB) and universal flash storage (UFS) 2.2.
- Supports 90Hz high frame-rate displays for fast, smooth gaming and streaming up to a 2520×1080 resolution
- Enhances video streaming capabilities with MiraVision HDR10+ video playback. MiraVision HDR10+ supports a variety of video features including dynamic range remapping
- Flexible camera configuration options with support for up to 64MP or 20+16MP dual cameras, plus a range of AI-camera enhancements powered by MediaTek’s integrated APU (AI Processing Unit).
- Integrated Voice Wakeup (VoW) to minimize the power consumption of always-on voice assistants, and dual-mic beamforming and noise suppression so voice assistants can hear users more clearly even in noisy environments.
Benchmarks of the Mediatek Dimensity 720
No official benchmarks have been carried out, but the new OPPO A72 is set to be the first phone with the Mediatek Dimensity 720.
This was recently benchmarked in Geekbench, which tests the CPU. The performance was almost identical to the Mediatek Helio G90t. With the CPU specification being almost identical, this is to be expected.
Phones featuring the Mediatek Dimensity 720
So far only the OPPO A72 is known to feature the new Mediatek Dimensity 720, it is unlikely that this phone will launch in the UK any time soon. However, it is expected that the 4GB + 128GB storage variant will cost 1,699 Yuan which works out at around £195.
The phone has a 6.5-inch punch-hole IPS LCD panel that offers Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels).
It is has a 4,040 mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. When it comes to the camera, the A72 5G sports 8MP selfie lens and a 16MP + 8MP + 2MP triple camera module at the back inside a square-shaped camera system. It also features a side-mounted fingerprint reader.
