Today at the Virtual Summit, MediaTek took the wraps off their latest affordable 5G chipset, the Dimensity 700.
I will admit, I am a little disappointed we have not had an announcement for a new flagship chipset to replace the Dimensity 1000+, but I guess it makes sense for MediaTek to focus on what they are good at affordable phones.
As you might have guessed, this is another iteration of the existing line-up with minor tweaks to hit different affordable price points.
MediaTek Dimensity 700 Features:
The Dimensity 700 packs advanced connectivity features including 5G Carrier Aggregation (2CC 5G-CA) and 5G dual SIM dual standby (DSDS), giving users access to the fastest speeds and 5G-exclusive Voice over New Radio (VoNR) services from either connection.
Key features of Dimensity 700 include:
- MediaTek 5G UltraSave: Delivers advanced power-saving technologies to improve battery life. It includes UltraSave Network Environment Detection, MediaTek 5G UltraSave OTA Content Awareness, Dynamic BWP and Connected Mode DRX. The built-in technology intelligently manages a device’s 5G connection so you can do more and charge your device less often.
- Premium 90Hz Display: Brands can design smartphones with crisp, high-resolution FullHD+ displays and ultra-fast refresh rates to reduce blur in animations, scrolling and games for the best user experience.
- Up to 64MP Cameras & Night Shot Enhancements: Supports 48MP or 64MP main camera sensors with AI-bokeh, AI-color and AI-beauty features. Plus, the integrated hardware-based imaging accelerators enable multi-frame noise reduction so users can capture high-quality shots with low noise, even at night.
- Multiple Voice Assistant Support: Supports voice assistants from global brands such as Alibaba, Amazon, Baidu, Google and Tencent to give device makers more configuration options.

With limited information on the embargoed press release, the chipset is a little confusing with only the CPU specification revealed, it looks like the Dimensity 700 will offer a superior specification to the Dimensity 720 which launched recently.
The GPU will be a Arm Mali G57 with 2 cores, so while the CPU runs faster than the 720, the GPU has one less core.
In comparison, the Dimensity 800 and also the 800U switch to a quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 design, giving these chipset superior multi-core processing power.
Qualcomm, on the other hand, have just launched the Snapdragon 750G, the uses just two big cores, but adopts the new Arm Cortex A77 CPU so should offer a far superior performance than the Dimensity 700 series.
Overall
It is impossible to draw any definitive conclusions about the MediaTek Dimensity 700, it really depends on the performance vs the cost of phone.
Qualcomm/Xiaomi really upped the ante with the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite which has the SD750G at a bargain price of £229.
Currently the only Dimensity based phone in the UK is the OPPO Reno4 Z with the Dimensity 800 which is around £330.
This should hopefully change this month with new more affordable phones, and the Dimensity 700 should help bring 5G chipsets to the lowest priced phones yet.
