It may come as no surprise that Huawei has developed their own smart speaker, named the AI Cube, however they have at least added some unique features not found on any other device in this niche.
The new AI Cube has a 4G LTE Cat 6 300Mbps router built into it meaning that it can work completely free from any wireless network. It may seem like a strange feature but I have regularly had people want to borrow my Sonos or Alexa, and the only way to do this is to mess about resetting up the wireless settings which is often to much trouble to bother with.
If you want to use the speaker in a normal configuration then you get Wi-Fi 802.11AC 5Ghz 1200Mbps allowing the device to integrate with your existing network.
Thankfully Huawei is not launching this with a new AI of their own, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they rill this out too, instead the new smart speaker will work with Amazon Alexa. When questioned about Google Assistant the speaker was coy about specifics but stated they will work with open standards.
I didn’t get chance to listen to the speaker, but Huawei claim this is a powerful sound system, what that actually means in the real world remains to be seen, but the unit itself is quite large, larger than a Google Home for example.
Huawei was also not willing to reveal the pricing during the briefing but I expect this will be announced any time soon.

HUAWEI AI Cube also features Alexa built-in, enabling users to effortlessly play music, control smart home devices, and access more than 50,000 skills – hands-free. All you need to do is ask.
In terms of speaker performance, HUAWEI AI Cube is built with a large, 400ml sound cavity and an aluminum diaphragm, enabling the AI speaker to produce high quality audio with crystal clear midrange and highs, as well as full, rounded bass. The audio is also enhanced with Huawei’s proprietary audio solution: HUAWEI Histen. Also featured on a range of Huawei devices, HUAWEI Histen enriches the AI speaker’s set of features by including virtual bass, linear phase equalizer, adaptive gain control, far-field voice recognition and more as part of its repertoire.
All the aforementioned technologies supported on the HUAWEI AI Cube are packed in small matte white body with a seamless 3D mesh base. Moreover, the AI speaker is designed in a way that the ports are hidden underneath the base, allowing it to blend in with any home decor easily.
