Huawei has decided to release the Lite version of their new Mate 20 phone before the main phones this year teasing us about the possible design and specification of the new flagship.

The new wallet-friendly phone comes with many high-end features with its dual front camera system being particularly appealing to the selfie generation.

The Mate 20 Lite is powered by a Kirin 710 SoC and 4GB of RAM. A 6.3-inch 19.5:9 FHD+ (2340×1080) HUAWEI FullView display, the Mate 20 lite offers a 4% increase in screen-to-body ratio, compared to the predecessor. Replacing the top bezel is a notched design which allows for the bigger screen, providing a great field of view for the ultimate mobile entertainment experience.

The phone has four cameras including 20MP+2MP  rear cameras with AI features that can recognise more than 500 different scenarios to auto optimise the shooting mode. The rear cameras also support Super Slow Motion, with users able to capture a snippet of action at 480fps, then play it back 16 times slower.

The front cameras actually have a higher specification than the rear with 24MP+2MP which also use AI to recognise more than 200 scenarios and can be used to generate 3D Qmoji (in GIF or video formats), perfect for sharing with friends on social media.

For me, the big selling point is the massive 3,750mAh which Huawei claim to last over 2 days for average users o 1.5 days for heavy users. The phone doesn’t have supercharge but does have 18W Quick Charge technology.

Another interesting feature was the inclusion of both a microSD card slot and 3.5mm headphone jack, this is something Huawei have removed from the previous P20 and Mate 10 line. With the inclusion on the Lite model, I would suggest it is guaranteed that the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will also feature them.

Huawei continues to push the advantages of AI with the press release stating

Using AI in real applications, the Mate 20 lite takes the hassle out of uninspiring tasks and replaces them with results that are curated for specific users. For example, the AI Shopping Assistant eradicates the time-consuming task of online shopping, with the AI identifying the item instead and sharing a link to where it can be bought online. Plus, AI Noise Cancellation ensures a smooth call experience by nullifying noisy backgrounds for high quality conversations. The days of manually managing photos are also over thanks to the AI Smart Gallery, which employs smart algorithms to automatically sort photos into albums.

As always with Huawei, the phone will use the EMUI features overlaying Android. During my demo with it, this did have some interesting multitasking options, for example, if you play a movie you can switch it into portrait mode with the movies taking up a small section of the screen allowing you to deal with messaging, emails or other tasks.

During my demo with the phone, everything felt great, the phone looks and feels like a premium model and everything was snappy to use.

The Huawei Mate 20 lite is available to purchase from £379 at Carphone Warehouse and Vodafone from Wednesday
