Couchmaster CYCON³ Review – Ergonomic Gaming Lap Desk for Couch and Bed

As a PC gamer, I have traditionally gamed at my desk, but for the past 5 plus years, the amount of gaming I have done has declined. My gaming PC is my work PC, and I have found it hard to switch off from work when at my desk.

A few years ago, I had abdominoplasty, and I invested in a couch table to use my laptop on and attempt to game, but the table was too small for a proper keyboard and mouse, so it was largely unused.

The Couchmaster CYCON³ appears to be the ideal solution for anyone wanting to game from their couch.

This particular model is geared towards gaming with a desktop PC and includes a built-in USB hub with six USB 3.2 ports, allowing you to use weird peripherals from your couch.

Couchmaster CYCON³: Features and Specifications

The Couchmaster CYCON³ is a lap desk solution designed for comfortable keyboard and mouse use while seated on a sofa. It combines ergonomic design with practical features to enhance the couch computing experience.

The design of the CYCON³ retains the basic concept of its predecessors while introducing some useful additions. The unit consists of three main components: two support cushions and the central support unit (desk).

The support cushions are covered with a suede-look microfiber material, while the filling is made of memory foam. This combination provides both comfort and durability. The central support unit, primarily constructed from plastic, rests loosely on these cushions. Users can adjust the distance between the cushions up to a maximum of 75cm, allowing for a customised fit.

Set Up

Setting up the Couchmaster CYCON³ requires some initial preparation, but the process is straightforward if you follow the instructions carefully.

1. Start by turning the support unit upside down and loosening the four large screws (two on each side) to open the flaps.
2. Inside, you’ll find four USB ports where you can connect your wired devices. If you’re using wireless peripherals, you can skip this step.
3. Take the shorter USB cable (0.8m) and plug it into the right side of the hub, routing it to the outside. You can choose to route it on either the left or right side, depending on your preference.
4. Use the provided cable harnesses to neatly store any excess cable length.
5. Once you’ve connected your devices and managed the cables, replace the flaps and secure them with the four screws.
6. Attach the mouse pocket to the front of the support unit. Right-handed users should place it on the right side, and left-handed users on the left.
7. Connect the CYCON³ to your PC. To do this, connect the short USB cable to the 5-metre USB extension cable, and then connect this to your PC.
8. Don’t forget to connect the power supply unit, which is necessary for the lighting and full functionality of the USB hub.
9. If desired, use the provided Velcro tape to secure your peripheral devices to the support unit.

After completing these steps, your Couchmaster CYCON³ should be ready for use. The setup process might seem a bit involved at first, but it ensures a clean and organised setup once completed.

Comfort and Ergonomics

However, it’s worth noting that the height and angle of the support unit are fixed, which might not suit all users or seating arrangements.

Initially, some users might feel a sense of confinement due to the setup. However, this sensation typically dissipates as one gets accustomed to the arrangement. The trade-off for this initial adjustment is a highly comfortable setup for extended gaming sessions.

One potential drawback is the difficulty in quickly getting up from the setup. Once you’re comfortably positioned with the Couchmaster CYCON³, it takes a bit more effort to stand up quickly if needed. This makes the setup more suitable for longer, uninterrupted gaming sessions rather than short bursts of play.

The new side pockets on both cushions are a practical addition, providing convenient storage for drinks, snacks, controllers, or other small items you might want to keep within reach.

In terms of gaming performance, the Couchmaster CYCON³ provides a stable platform for keyboard and mouse use. While it might not necessarily improve your gaming skills, it does allow for a more relaxed gaming posture compared to a traditional desk setup.

Home Office Use

While the Couchmaster CYCON³ is primarily designed for gaming, it’s worth considering its potential as a home office solution. Nerdytec does offer specialised versions like the CYBOT, CYWORX, or CYBOSS for office use, but the CYCON³ can serve as a multipurpose option for those who don’t want multiple setups in their living room.

From an ergonomic standpoint, the CYCON³, especially when paired with the CYBACK cushion, provides good support for extended computer use. However, there are some limitations when using it with a laptop:

1. The large mouse pad, while great for gaming, can be problematic for laptop placement. If the laptop isn’t centred, it can lead to an awkward typing position.
2. The touch panel for the HORIZONLIGHT bar might be covered by a laptop, leading to accidental inputs.
3. The current cable setup is optimised for desktop PC use and might not be ideal for frequent switching between a gaming PC and a work laptop.

To make the CYCON³ more versatile for both gaming and home office use, potential improvements could include:

• A smaller, removable mouse pad option
• Repositioning of the touch panel to the side
• An additional direct power connection on the short USB hub cable for easy laptop connectivity

These changes would make it easier to switch between gaming and work setups without compromising the core functionality of the CYCON³.

Price and Alternative Options

The Couchmaster CYCON³ is available directly from nerdtec for 189 EUR, including VAT and shipping.  This works out at around £162.

The product page states that the product is currently only supplied with an EU power plug.

The Couchmaster CYBOT, which is designed for laptops, is 144.90 EUR or £124.32.

Amazon lists the Couchmaster CYCON² Black Edition for £164 or the fusion grey colour for £154.

While there are plenty of alternative options, everything looks inferior to the Couchmaster range. However, most alternative options are quite a bit cheaper:

The Corsair Lapdog Gaming Control Center is likely the best alternative option, being almost the only other gaming-focused product. It doesn’t have side cushions, so it looks like it would be less stable. It has an RRP of £110 and does not appear to be for sale anymore.

The Corsair K63 Wireless Gaming Lapboard for Mechanical Keyboard is essentially the same product, but it also includes a Corsair K63 Wireless Gaming Lapboard, which is no longer available for sale.

The Razer Turret is a similar concept that was designed for the Xbox One, but this is also not available anymore.

The most affordable option would be a laptop tray such as the Youyijia Laptop Tray, which is available for £19 but is likely too small to use for gaming.

The Cooper Mega Table Plus is £55, which is well reviewed, but is only 65cm wide vs 82cm for the Couchmaster, and it looks like it would be unstable for gaming.

 The cooloo8 Lap Desk Pillow is £90 and has a similar pillow design but lacks a hard surface top for keyboard and mouse.

The Comehealthy Lap Desk Pillow appears to be the best alternative option, as it has a large flat top, but you’d still need a hard surface to comfortably game with a keyboard and mouse. It also appears to be less ergonomic for gaming as the surface sits quite high.

Overall

The Couchmaster CYCON³ is a well-designed for those seeking a more comfortable and ergonomic way to game or work from their couch or bed. It successfully addresses many of the challenges associated with using a keyboard and mouse in these non-traditional settings.

The ergonomic benefits of the CYCON³ are clear. The supportive cushions and adjustable positioning help to reduce strain on the shoulders, neck, and back during extended use. The high-quality materials, including memory foam cushions and durable fabrics, contribute to both comfort and longevity.

For me, the main selling point for the Couchmaster range of products is the complete lack of competition. Razer and Corsair had some interesting competing solutions, but these appear to have been discontinued. Even so, I think I prefer the idea of the Couchmaster, with its side cushions providing stability when gaming.

While its price point might deter casual users, serious gamers seeking comfort and practicality will likely find its advantages justify the cost. Even though the price is high, I think you get quite a lot for your money.
