Wi-fi 6 is the biggest thing to happen to wireless networking in years with improvements in features across the board. In theory, it should be able to compete if not best gigabit wired connections with theoretical speeds of 10.53Gbps and reduced latency.

I have covered the differences between Wi-fi 6 (802.11ax) vs Wi-Fi ( 802.11ac) in some detail, though all the improvements can get quite technical.

Wi-fi 6 capable routers have been on the market for a while now, the problem being there have been no clients available to use this new technology.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 is possibly the first device that features this new standard and in April it was revealed that the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX20 module was coming soon as well as the Killer AX1650 module.

Dell has just announced some XPS laptops that feature Wi-Fi 6 and many of the Wi-Fi enabled AMD X570 motherboards to feature it.

For users wanting to upgrade their existing hardware to Wi-Fi 6, you can finally do it with the Killer AX1650 module, which is available from Amazon.com for $35.

So now that we finally have a flurry of client devices coming or available, you may want to upgrade your router to get the most of this new technology.

So what are the current options available in the UK? I will pre-warn you, they are all very expensive, as is the case with any new technology.

Asus

ASUS RT-AX88U Wireless-AX6000 AiMesh

chrome 1xRdEcar87

Price – £299 – pre-order

Not actually available yet, but you can pre-order it on Amazon.

RT-AX88U is a 4×4 dual-band Wi-Fi router that provides 160MHz bandwidth and 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections. With a total networking speed of about 6000Mbps — 1148Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 4804Mbps on the 5GHz band — RT-AX88U is 2.3X faster than 802.11ac 4×4 dual-band routers.

The big selling point for me is AiMesh. I have not used this tech yet, but you should be able to pair it with other devices and create a mesh system.
