Assembly is straightforward, and instructions are adequate, better than some Chinese brands, and it is relatively intuitive what you need to do. The process involves attaching the laser head, connecting the power, and optionally installing the safety enclosure or rotary extension. Calibration is required for precise focusing, achieved by merging two red dots projected onto the work surface. The stand’s up/down controls and software preview modes make this process relatively simple.
Connecting to a computer or mobile device is also uncomplicated. The LP5 supports USB-C for direct connection and Wi-Fi for wireless operation, though only 2.4 GHz networks are supported. Initial setup requires registration within the LDS software or app.

For most of my testing, I opted to use the Android app, which was easy to use and worked reliably.
In Use
Material Compatibility and Results
The LP5’s dual-laser system enables engraving and cutting on a wide variety of materials. The package included several items to work with including wood, leather, acrylic, metal, stone and two wooden keyrings.
- Wood: The diode laser produces crisp, detailed engravings and can cut thin sheets. The lack of air assist means some charring and smoke residue, but this can be mitigated by sanding or using masking tape. Engraving is fast, with simple keyrings or coasters completed in under a minute. Cutting thicker wood is possible but requires multiple passes and careful parameter adjustment.
- Metals: The fibre laser excels on stainless steel, aluminium, brass, and similar metals. Engravings are sharp, with good depth and contrast, suitable for tags, coins, and jewellery. Cutting thin metal (up to 1 mm) is possible, though it is slow and may require multiple passes.
- Leather: Both engraving and cutting are effective, producing clean results with minimal scorching when parameters are optimised.
- Acrylic, Glass, Stone: The diode laser can engrave acrylic and glass, while the fibre laser handles stone and coated metals. Results are generally good, though experimentation with settings is needed for best outcomes.
- Plastics: The fibre laser can mark certain plastics, though results vary depending on composition.
Speed and Precision
The LP5 is capable of very high engraving speeds, particularly at lower resolutions. For intricate designs or high-resolution work (up to 8K), speed is reduced, but detail is excellent. The preview system, with its blue framing light and red dot focusing, aids in precise placement, though ambient lighting and material reflectivity can affect visibility.
When I engraved one of the included keyrings, it successfully completed the process in a few seconds.
Batch processing is efficient, especially with the safety enclosure and camera module, which automates alignment and filling for repeated tasks.

User Experience
I am not a crafty person and have no experience with laser engravers, but I found the LP5 is easy to learn, with intuitive controls and a gentle learning curve for basic tasks.
For basic tasks, it’s really just a matter of setting the dimensions of the item to be engraved, adding your design, using the preview function to align the item, and setting the power levels. Even getting the right power levels is as simple as there are numerous predefined settings. Once I had done one successful engraving, I typically adjusted the settings based on the results from the last engraving. For example, I initially used balsa wood to do a QR code, but then did a keyring which was thicker wood, so I dialled up the settings for a deeper cut.
I’d say the hardest part is making sure everything is measured and lined up correctly to ensure it looks good when finished. As you can see from my QR code, I didn’t bother to use the preview function or align anything up, so the end result is very wonky.

More advanced operations, such as deep 3D engraving or multi-material projects, require experimentation and familiarity with the software’s parameter settings. The absence of a physical power button is a minor annoyance, as the machine powers on with a noisy fan as soon as it is plugged in.
The machine’s compact size and light weight make it suitable for desktop use, and the modular design allows for easy transport and storage.

The LaserPecker LP4 starts at £1259, and the portable LP2 starts at £629.
Xtool has the F1 from £1300, which is a 10w laser engraver, or the F1 Ultra, which is a dual 20w laser engraver like the LP5 but features air assist and a touchscreen. But, it costs £3279.
