Garmin MARQ Golfer arrives for £1,699.99 preloaded with 41,000 golf courses

The Garmin MARQ range is the niche-specific ultra-premium range of watches from Garmin. They are based on the flagship Fenix 6 but come with a premium design and build quality, then with additional features added for specific activities.

Garmin MARQ variants

To date they have already launched:

• The Driver for £2,249.99 with preloaded access to more than 250 of the world’s most famous tracks.
• The Aviator for £1,799.99 with Direct-to emergency navigation.
• The Captain (and a Captain America edition) for £1,699.99 with current weather and tides for your home port.
• The Commander for £1,699.99 that has night vision compatibility keeps your movements cloaked in darkness, and a  stealth mode function lets you avoid storing and sharing your position.
• The Adventurer for £1,599.99 allowing you to track your altitude gain and weather changes.
• The Athlete for £1,399.99 which seems to be a premium variant of the Fenix 6, hence the lower price point vs the other MARQs

Finally, Garmin has now introduced the Golfer which has more than 41,000 preloaded golf courses and the most advanced game-tracking data ever.

Golf Specific Features

It has some other useful sounding golf features including:

• Virtual Caddie: factors in wind speed and direction and suggests a club based on the distance you typically swing with that particular club.
• Wind speed and direction: which makes figuring out which club to use and which direction to swing much easier.
• Hazard View: allows you to quickly scroll through each hazard on the map and get critical distance information so you know what to avoid.
• Club Tracking: Pair your watch with the included Approach CT10 club tracking sensors for more advanced tracking capabilities, including locations, distances and club type.
• PlaysLike Distance feature adjusts yardages to account for uphill and downhill shots.
• Green View feature gives you each green’s true shape from wherever you are on the course, and it allows you to move the pin for greater accuracy.
• GO Green – Quickly reference the front, middle and back of the green so you can make the shot you want.
• PinPointer feature will tell you the direction of the pin so you can make the most of each swing.
• Garmin Golf App: You can even use a separate app for strokes gained analysis, to participate in leaderboards and tournaments and to gain more data about your game.

Approach CT10 Sensors

With the watch you get three Approach CT10 sensors with a retail value of £69.99

These allow you to:

• Installed sensor automatically tracks every shot on any club — even your putts and chip shots
• Pairs with compatible Garmin golf watches to automatically track every stroke, including shot locations, distances and club type without additional effort
• Collects data from each shot and club so you can analyse strokes gained and other stats
• Stats for each club with a sensor installed show up on your compatible Garmin golf watch¹ after pulling the club from the bag
• See how far you typically hit each club; view stats for accuracy to the fairway or green

The caveat of this is that Garmin sells a 3-pack for £70 or a full set for £260. So if you want to then use the sensor for all your clubs, you are forced into buying the whole set, rather than there being an option to complete your existing sensor set.

Four 3 packs will set you back £280, so it is cheaper to buy the full set.

Then again, if you can afford a £1700 watch, this may not be a huge concern for you.

Overall

The MARQ series is not really targeted towards you average pleb such as myself. I can imagine they are popular with wealthy people, offering all the advantages of a fitness/smartwatch while having something premium looking on your wrist.

Garmin seems to have added a lot of features to this watch to justify the cost. Golf can be a very expensive sport, so this may not even be that expensive for many players.
