It has been a while since I reviewed a DAC. In recent years, portable DACs seem to have become popular, but I am a die-hard speaker fan. I don’t mind headphones, but for all-day use, I much prefer playing music or games with my speakers. I have, therefore, always favoured desktop DACs that have the flexibility of a speaker and headphones.
I am particularly fond of a desktop DAC with easy-to-access controls, in particular, a big volume knob, so I can easily dial down the volume when needed. For the past few years, the FiiO K5 Pro has been my DAC of choice.
It may not be a very high-end DAC, but it has served me well.
Recently, Fosi Audio got in touch and asked if I would like to review their new K7 DAC, which is due to be made available on Kickstarter before its full release.

Unboxing / Design

The Fosi Audio K7 adopts a very different design than the K5. All the controls are now located on the top of the DAC with an LCD centrally located with a volume knob on the left and then a control knob on the right for the various EQ and microphone adjustments.

It has 5 buttons across the top panel for different functions, such as powering it on/off, switching inputs/outputs and adjusting the settings.

On the front are the headphone outputs and microphone input, and on the rear are the power input, USB-C/optical/Coaxial input, an antenna for Bluetooth input, then the RCA output.
The overall design is functional and after playing around with the buttons, it is quite simple to use

Test Set Up
I tested these with a selection of headphones, including:
I used the EPOS headphones for the microphone both for gaming and when at work using it with the 3CX softphone.
Additionally, I used the RCA output and connected it to my Edifier S3000 Pro speakers.
For the vast majority of my testing, I used the USB-C input from my PC for the K7.
I also tested the Bluetooth using my Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Honor Magic 6 Pro.

Performance

When used as a headphone amplifier, the K7 provides ample power to drive most headphones. It offers a relatively neutral sound signature, which should appeal to those who prefer an accurate representation of their audio content. The bass response is tight and controlled, while the midrange is clear and well-defined. The treble is crisp without being harsh, although some users might find it slightly bright with certain headphones.
The K7’s performance with gaming audio is particularly noteworthy. It provides clear and detailed sound, which can enhance the gaming experience by making it easier to locate in-game audio cues. The wide soundstage also contributes to a more immersive gaming experience.
When using the line outputs to connect to powered speakers, the K7 maintains its clean and detailed sound character. However, as with any DAC, the final sound quality will also depend on the quality of the speakers or amplifier you’re using.
Gaming Performance
For gamers, the Fosi Audio K7 offers several features that enhance the gaming experience. The high-resolution audio support ensures that you can hear game audio with excellent clarity and detail. This can be particularly beneficial in competitive gaming scenarios where audio cues are crucial.
The optical input is a valuable feature for console gamers, allowing direct connection to PlayStation or Xbox consoles for high-quality digital audio. The USB input is equally useful for PC gamers, providing a simple plug-and-play solution.
The microphone input on the front panel is another gaming-friendly feature. It allows you to use a separate microphone for in-game communication, which can be particularly useful if you prefer using audiophile headphones that don’t come with a built-in microphone.
However, it’s worth noting that the K7 doesn’t offer any virtual surround sound processing. While this ensures a more accurate audio representation, some gamers might miss the expanded soundstage that virtual surround can provide in certain games.

Ease of Use
The Fosi Audio K7 is designed to be user-friendly. It’s largely a plug-and-play device, requiring minimal setup in most cases. For USB connections, most operating systems will recognise the K7 automatically without the need for additional drivers.
Price and Alternative Options
At the time of writing, I have not been told the price of the Fosi Audio K7 Gaming Headphone Amp/DAC.
The Fosi Audio K5 Pro is currently available on Amazon for £80.
The FiiO K5 Pro still commands a price of £150. There is also the FiiO 11 for £130.
I like the Creative Sound Blaster X4 and this is available for under £100 with the on-page voucher on Amazon.
Topping is another popular, affordable option for DACs. The Topping DX1 is available for £99.
Overall
The Fosi Audio K7 is a capable and versatile DAC/headphone amplifier that offers good value for money. It’s particularly well-suited for gamers looking to upgrade their audio setup, thanks to its optical input and microphone support. The device also performs well for general music listening, making it a good all-rounder for those who want to improve their audio experience without spending a fortune.
While it may not satisfy the most demanding audiophiles, the K7 provides a noticeable step up from basic audio solutions. Its ability to drive a wide range of headphones, support for high-resolution audio, and multiple connectivity options make it a flexible choice for various setups.
The build quality and design are impressive for the price point, although some minor usability issues like the lack of an input selector switch might be inconvenient for some users.
Overall, if you’re a gamer or casual audio enthusiast looking for an affordable way to improve your sound quality, the Fosi Audio K7 is definitely worth considering. It offers a good balance of features, performance, and value that should satisfy most users’ needs.
