Earlier this month, I reviewed the excellent Nubia Z50, which is the cheapest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 available in the UK, priced at £500 on Amazon. It is the Chinese model, but at that price it is still well worth considering. The UK variant of the ZTE Nubia Z50S Pro is also available and this is priced at £700.
Nubia today announced the launch of its latest flagship smartphone, the Z60 Ultra. This new model comes with significant upgrades to the photography system along with an improved under-display selfie camera.
High-Definition Triple Camera System
The highlight of the Z60 Ultra is the new NeoVision triple camera system, featuring high-definition optics and advanced image stabilization. The system includes:
- 50MP 18mm ultra-wide angle main camera
- 50MP 35mm high precision main camera
- 64MP 85mm telephoto portrait camera
This combination covers all major focal lengths and caters to different photography needs. The ultra-wide camera uses a large 1/1.55-inch sensor with f/1.8 aperture for low-distortion shots. The 35mm main camera has a bright f/1.59 aperture for better light capture. Finally, the 85mm portrait lens uses a large 1/2-inch sensor for enhanced bokeh effect.
All three cameras come with full optical image stabilization, ensuring blur-free shots and videos. The Z60 Ultra can also shoot 4K videos at 120fps frame rate with super night mode and stabilization.
Enhanced Computational Photography
In addition to the optics, Nubia has upgraded the computational photography capabilities of the NeoVision system. A new starry sky algorithm specifically optimizes ultra-wide night shots to capture better details of the galaxy and Milky Way. The portrait mode now supports multiple focal lengths – 50mm, 35mm, and 85mm.
Additional new features include lightning photo capture, 65:24 cinematic video aspect ratio, and pre-recording for action shots.
Upgraded Under-Display Camera
The Z60 Ultra features Nubia’s 5th generation under-display selfie camera technology offering noticeable improvements:
- Higher 400PPI screen density in front camera area
- Larger 2.8μm photosensitive pixel size for brighter selfies
- Enhanced colour accuracy and stability
As a result, the quality of selfies and video calls see a boost despite having the front camera hidden behind the screen.
Powerful Internals and Battery
Under the hood, the Z60 Ultra is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset based on the 4nm process. This flagship chip delivers improved CPU and GPU performance compared to last year’s models.
The phone comes equipped with up to 16GB RAM and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage for smooth multitasking and app loading. Powering all of this is a large 6000mAh battery supporting fast charging.
For an enhanced gaming experience, Nubia has included a 120Hz AMOLED screen, 1200Hz touch sampling rate, and X-axis linear vibration motor.
Striking Isomorphic Design
Visually, the Z60 Ultra features a unique cyberpunk-inspired design language that Nubia calls “Isomorphism Universe”. The rectangular camera island stretches edge-to-edge symmetrically, showcasing the photography capabilities.
The back panel uses a special AG flash-sand glass process with microscopic crystal structures, giving the phone a metallic look. The sides flaunt aerospace-grade metal frames with customizable sliding buttons for quick app and camera access.
Global Availability and Pricing
The Nubia Z60 Ultra will be available globally starting December 29, 2023, with pre-orders live now. The phone starts at $599 in the US and €679 in Europe for the 8GB/256GB model. There are also 12GB/256GB and 16GB/512GB variants priced higher.
In the UK and Mexico, the pricing is £679 and Mex$12,499 respectively for the base version. The Z60 Ultra will also be sold on Amazon US and Mexico’s MercadoLibre platforms next month.
With powerful imaging capabilities, upgraded selfie camera, and cutting-edge design, the Z60 Ultra brings Nubia back into the flagship smartphone competition. The pricing is also aggressive, undercutting rivals like the Galaxy S23 series. It remains to be seen how well the phone performs in real-world usage.
