Design & Fit
The WH700NB have a sleek, minimalist design with an all-black plastic construction. The earcups have a subtle Edifier logo and feature soft protein leather earpads that are comfortable for extended listening sessions. The headband is adjustable and also padded for comfort.
At 271g, the headphones are relatively lightweight for over-ears, making them easy to wear for hours without fatigue. The clamping force is just right – snug enough to stay secure but not too tight.
The right earcup houses the power button, volume controls, and a USB-C port for charging. The buttons have a nice tactile feel and are easy to locate by touch.
Edifier App
The Edifier Connect app, available for iOS and Android, allows you to tweak various settings on the WH700NB headphones. You can turn ANC on/off, check battery status, enable low latency gaming mode, and choose from sound effect presets like Dynamic, Classic, and Customized.
The app is straightforward to use with a clean interface. During testing, it connected to the headphones quickly and reliably. While not as fully-featured as apps from Sony or Bose, it covers the essentials and is a welcome inclusion at this price point.
Sound Quality
The WH700NB are equipped with 40mm dynamic drivers that deliver clear, detailed sound with punchy bass. The soundstage is reasonably wide for closed-back headphones, providing good instrument separation.
The default sound signature is well-balanced with a slight emphasis on the low-end. Bass is full-bodied and tight without overpowering the mids or highs. Vocals come through clearly and there’s a good amount of detail in the treble.
Compared to more expensive headphones, the WH700NB lacks some refinement and resolution, but the difference is not night and day. They perform very capably for general music listening, podcasts, and movies.
The headphones support the standard SBC Bluetooth codec. While some may lament the lack of higher-quality codecs like AAC or aptX, SBC has come a long way and sounds perfectly fine for most content, especially at this price.
Active Noice Cancellation
Considering the £50 price point, I had low expectations of the ANC of these headphones. It is typically the feature that really differentiates premium-priced headphones like the Sony WH-1000XM5.
Surprisingly, the WH700NB fare better than expected in this regard. The ANC is effective at reducing low frequency sounds like the hum of an air conditioner or airplane engine. It struggles a bit more with higher pitched noises and voices, but still helps to minimise distractions.
There is a faint hiss when ANC is enabled and no audio is playing, but this is common for ANC headphones and not really noticeable once the music is playing. The headphones also have a transparency mode that allows outside sound in when needed.
While the ANC can’t match the best from Sony or Bose or the Edifier WH950NB it’s impressive for the price and considerably better than no ANC at all. For those who want light noise cancellation without breaking the bank, the WH700NB deliver.
Battery Life
Battery life is a standout feature of the WH700NB. Edifier claims 45 hours with ANC on and a whopping 68 hours with ANC off. In testing, the headphones lived up to these lofty claims, providing days of use on a single charge.
This outperforms many headphones, which cost a lot more, and is a huge convenience. Fast charging is also supported, with a 10-minute charge providing 7 hours of playtime. A full charge using the included USB-C cable takes about 1.5 hours.
The impressive battery life makes the WH700NB ideal for travel, commuting, or anyone who hates having to recharge their headphones constantly.
Price and Alternative Options
The Edifier WH700NB are available to buy on Amazon with the price listed as £50. At the time of writing, an additional £10 off voucher was available.
The older Edifier W600BT is listed at £40 with 20% off available.
Then Edifier W820NB Plus is listed at £60. These have LDAC for superior audio quality and claim to provide ANC depth of up to -43dB.
Overall
The Edifier WH700NB are an excellent pair of affordable ANC headphones. The sound quality is great for the price, the battery life is exceptional, and the ANC performs well for the price point.
The only minor criticism I have of them is that the Edifier W820NB Plus might be a better buy. There is only £10 difference in the list price, and my philosophy is always to buy the best option within your budget. However, with the current discounts, the price gap has increased to £20, making the W820NB Plus 50% more expensive.
