The Edifier NeoBuds Planar earbuds bring planar magnetic driver technology to the true wireless form factor, promising audiophile-grade sound in a portable package.
I have previously reviewed the Edifier Neobuds Plus and NeoBuds Pro 2. The Planar model shares many of the characteristics but comes in at a premium price of £200 due to the planar magnetic driver technology.
At this price point, they face stiff competition from established brands but offer a unique proposition with their driver technology and extensive feature set.
In particular, the appeal here will likely be for audiophiles who want a more neutral sound, which most consumer earbuds lack.
The question is whether the planar magnetic drivers deliver enough of an audio advantage to justify the price premium over conventional alternatives.

Features / Overview

The Edifier NeoBuds Planar earbuds bring planar magnetic driver technology to true wireless earbuds, offering high-fidelity sound in a portable form factor. These earbuds pack numerous technical advancements that should appeal to audio enthusiasts looking for premium sound quality and features.
Audio Technology
The NeoBuds Planar’s standout feature is the 12mm modularised planar magnetic drivers. Unlike traditional dynamic drivers that use a centrally driven voice coil, these planar magnetic drivers distribute force evenly across the entire diaphragm. This results in more controlled movement, reduced distortion and clearer sound reproduction.
Supporting this driver design is Edifier’s 2nd generation EqualMass™ wiring technology. This patented approach uses identical-width wires in varying numbers to achieve uniform weight distribution across the diaphragm, with symmetric supporting wiring for improved stability. The diaphragm itself is remarkably thin-just 2μm at its base and under 10μm total thickness-which reduces inertia and allows for faster response to audio signals.
Connectivity and Codec Support
The earbuds feature Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity with an effective range of about 10 metres. They support an impressive array of audio codecs:
- aptX
- aptX Adaptive
- aptX Lossless
- Snapdragon Sound
- LHDC 5.0
- LDAC
- AAC
- SBC
With Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound technology, the NeoBuds Planar delivers high-resolution wireless audio with sampling rates up to 96kHz/24-bit when using LHDC 5.0 or LDAC codecs. This extensive codec support makes these earbuds compatible with virtually any modern device while maintaining excellent audio quality.
Noise Cancellation and Call Quality
The NeoBuds Planar incorporates Qualcomm’s third-generation adaptive active noise-cancelling technology, which automatically adjusts to your environment to block unwanted noise. Each earbud contains three microphones (six total) working with AI voice enhancement algorithms to isolate your voice from background noise during calls.
Battery Life and Charging
Battery performance varies depending on usage:
- With ANC off: 7.5 hours of playback from the earbuds, plus an additional 22.5 hours from the charging case
- With ANC on: 5 hours from the earbuds, plus 15 hours from the case
The charging case supports wireless charging for added convenience, though this requires a third-party wireless charger not included with the earbuds.
Additional Features
The NeoBuds Planar includes several practical features that improve the user experience:
- Multipoint connection allows simultaneous connection to two devices
- Smart wear detection automatically pauses or resumes playback when removing or inserting the earbuds
- Gaming mode with ultra-low latency (0.08 seconds) for synchronised audio during gameplay
- IP55 rating for dust and water resistance
- Google Fast Pair for quick connection to Android devices
- EDIFIER ConneX app support for EQ customisation, earbud finding, LED colour selection, and additional controls
Technical Specifications
- Frequency response: 20Hz – 40kHz
- Output sound pressure level: 92 ± 3dB (A)
- Input: 5V ⎓ 200mA (earbuds), 5V ⎓ 1A (charging case)
Design / Fit

The NeoBuds Planar features a design that is very similar to the other NeoBud models.
The earbuds themselves have a somewhat angular appearance with a matte finish that resists fingerprints. Each earbud features a touch-sensitive panel with the Edifier logo, which handles various control functions.
The charging case has a pebble-like shape with a satin graphite finish and a reflective silver Edifier logo, giving it a premium feel. The front of the case features an RGB light strip that indicates charging status and can be customised through the companion app. The case is compact enough to fit comfortably in a pocket yet substantial enough to provide multiple charges for the earbuds.

Despite housing larger planar magnetic drivers, the earbuds maintain a comfortable fit thanks to their ergonomic design. The angled in-ear structure ensures they sit naturally in the ear canal, while the five included pairs of silicone ear tips accommodate various ear sizes. Finding the right tip size is crucial not only for comfort but also for optimal sound quality and noise isolation.
At 5.3g per earbud, the NeoBuds Planar is slightly heavier than some competitors, but the weight is well-distributed, preventing fatigue during extended listening sessions. I wore them for several consecutive hours without significant discomfort, though your experience may vary depending on ear shape.

The pinch-based controls take some getting used to compared to the tap controls found on many other earbuds. I generally hate controls on earbuds because I use them for fitness a lot, and inevitably touch them if I feel them slipping out. Therefore, the pinch-based controls of these reduce accidental touches. I am still not a big fan, I prefer getting my phone out and adjusting the settings there, but this strikes a balance between the convenience of having controls on your earbud and reducing accidental touches.
I have mostly been using these for walks at my lunchtime and have found that they are comfortable to wear with minimal adjustments needed. I was also able to do a couple of long runs with them. Everyone is different, but they are probably not the best option for gym/fitness use due to the slightly heavier weight, which means they are more likely to slip out. Plus, no one wants to lose or break £200 earbuds.

Edifier App
Just like the other NeoBuds, these use the EDIFIER ConneX app. While it is not my favourite app to control earbuds, it is functional and does the things you want.
Upon connecting the earbuds, the app displays battery levels for each earbud and the charging case. The main screen provides access to noise cancellation modes, including adaptive ANC, strong ANC, ambient sound, and off. Users can also toggle game mode, which reduces latency at the expense of battery life.
The equaliser section offers several preset sound profiles, including Classic, Dynamic, Bass, and Rock. Additionally, there’s a custom EQ option with an 8-band equaliser for those who prefer to fine-tune the sound to their preferences. The app saves these custom profiles, allowing quick switching between different sound signatures for various content types.
Touch control customisation is another valuable feature, allowing users to assign different functions to various touch gestures. The default configuration is sensible, but the ability to modify controls according to personal preference enhances the user experience.
Additional features include a “find my earbuds” function that plays a sound to help locate misplaced earbuds, LED light customisation for the charging case, and firmware updates to improve performance and add new features over time.
The app also provides access to spatial audio settings, though the implementation is basic compared to some competitors. Users can toggle the feature on or off, but there’s limited customisation beyond that.
In general, I normally use the app once to set up the earbuds how I like, then leave it, with the exception of occasionally adjusting the ANC.
Sound Quality
The planar magnetic drivers deliver a sound profile that’s noticeably different from typical dynamic driver earbuds. The most immediate impression is one of clarity and detail, particularly in the midrange and treble frequencies.
The frequency response is well-balanced, with no single range dominating the mix. Bass is present and articulate without being overwhelming, mids are clear and forward, and treble is detailed without becoming harsh or fatiguing. This balanced presentation makes the NeoBuds Planar suitable for a wide range of music genres.
I expected the bass to be quite flat as it’s an area where planar magnetic drivers often differ from dynamic drivers.
I did find with some genres, mainly hip hop, it wasn’t quite as punchy as I would like, but I was impressed with it for electronica and other genres. The bass is tight, controlled, and accurate rather than boomy or exaggerated. Bass notes start and stop with precision, providing excellent definition between notes. While bass enthusiasts might find the low-end response somewhat restrained compared to bass-heavy consumer earbuds, the quality of the bass reproduction is exceptional.
The midrange is where these earbuds truly excel. Vocals sound great with remarkable clarity and presence, allowing you to hear subtle details in performances that other earbuds might obscure. Acoustic instruments sound natural and lifelike, with accurate timbre reproduction.
Treble is something I struggle with on many earbuds. I am very sensitive to high-end sounds and often find them harsh to the point of being unpleasant. Due to this, I have typically favoured bass-forward consumer earbuds which taper off with the highs.
But the planar magnetic technology makes the treble on these much more enjoyable. Performance is detailed and extended without becoming harsh or sibilant.
Cymbals, high hats, and other high-frequency instruments have a natural sparkle and decay. Even at higher volumes, the treble remains composed and non-fatiguing.
The planar magnetic drivers also excel at handling dynamic shifts in music. Sudden changes in volume or complexity are reproduced with ease, maintaining clarity even during demanding passages. This quality makes these earbuds particularly well-suited for classical music and film soundtracks, where dynamic range is crucial.
When using high-resolution codecs like LDAC or LHDC, the sound quality improves further, with increased detail and a more spacious presentation. However, even when using standard AAC or SBC codecs with devices that don’t support the higher-resolution options, the sound quality remains impressive.
Active Noise Cancellation
The active noise cancellation system in the NeoBuds Planar performs well, though it doesn’t quite match the class-leading performance of some competitors. The system uses Qualcomm’s third-generation adaptive technology, which automatically adjusts the level of noise cancellation based on your environment.
In practice, the ANC is most effective against consistent, low-frequency noise such as aeroplane engines, air conditioning units, and train rumbles. These sounds are significantly reduced, though not completely eliminated. Mid-frequency noises like office chatter and keyboard clicks are moderately reduced, while high-frequency sounds receive the least attenuation.
The adaptive nature of the ANC system is particularly useful when moving between different environments. The system smoothly adjusts the level of noise cancellation without requiring manual intervention, providing an optimal balance between noise reduction and audio quality.
Three ANC modes are available through the app: Adaptive, Strong, and Ambient. Strong mode provides the maximum level of noise cancellation but can create a slight pressure sensation that some users might find uncomfortable during extended use. Adaptive mode adjusts the level of noise cancellation based on your surroundings, while Ambient mode enhances external sounds for awareness of your environment.
Microphone / Call Quality
Each earbud contains three microphones, creating a six-microphone array that works with AI voice enhancement algorithms to isolate your voice from background noise.
In testing, call recipients consistently reported clear, natural-sounding voice reproduction, even in challenging environments like busy streets and windy conditions. The system effectively filters out most background noise while maintaining voice clarity, making these earbuds excellent for calls and video conferences.
The earbuds also support aptX Voice technology, which increases the bandwidth allocated to voice transmission, resulting in more natural-sounding calls compared to standard Bluetooth implementations. This feature is particularly noticeable when both parties are using devices that support the technology.
Google Assistant work well. The microphones accurately capture voice commands, even in moderately noisy environments, and the response playback is clear and easy to understand.
Battery Life
Battery performance varies depending on usage:
- With ANC off: 7.5 hours of playback from the earbuds, plus an additional 22.5 hours from the charging case
- With ANC on: 5 hours from the earbuds, plus 15 hours from the case
These figures are competitive within the premium true wireless earbud market, though not class-leading. During testing, the actual battery life closely matched Edifier’s claims when using AAC codec at moderate volume levels (around 50-60%).
Using higher-resolution codecs like LDAC or LHDC reduces battery life by approximately 20-30%, bringing the playback time down to about 4 hours with ANC enabled. Similarly, listening at higher volume levels will reduce battery life further.
The charging case provides approximately three full charges for the earbuds, extending the total listening time to around 20-30 hours, depending on your usage patterns. A battery level indicator on the case provides a general idea of remaining capacity, though it’s not as precise as percentage-based indicators found on some competing products.
Fast charging is supported, with a 10-minute charge providing approximately 1.5 hours of playback time. This feature is particularly useful for situations where you need to quickly top up the battery before a commute or workout.
You also have the benefit of wireless charging which I find very convenient with earbuds, as I now naturally place them on my QDOS SnapStand 3-in-1 Wireless Charger in the office.
