Last month, Cherry expanded its product range with three new microphones, one of which I will be reviewing soon.
This month they are back to doing what they do best. They have announced a compact wireless keyboard.
Design and Dimensions
This is the first compact wireless keyboard they have made, but it is not the first slim keyboard. It looks like they have taken the KW 9100 SLIM, which is designed for Mac, then chopped a bit off, making it a 60% form factor and squashed the keys together.
The end result is a super small and thin keyboard that measures 29.5 x 12.9 x 1.6 centimetres.
Some of the press shots have people using this as a normal keyboard in an office. I am not sure I could use this as my full-time keyboard, but it looks absolutely perfect for travelling. I despise using a laptop keyboard when working away, and my current travel keyboard is the Vissles LP85 optical-mechanical keyboard. It is a fantastic keyboard, but the keys can sometimes pop off while travelling.
The Cherry KW 9200 has smaller overall dimensions. Importantly, it’s about 1cm shorter, making it a bit more portable inside a bag. Cherry also supplies a pouch with it, which should avoid snagging the keys when inside your bag.
Connectivity
Like many of these compact wireless keyboards, you have excellent connectivity. It has two Bluetooth 5.0 low energy channels, one 2.4 GHz wireless channel and one wired channel.
Cherry SX scissor keys
The keys are Cherry SX scissor mechanisms for an ideal operating feeling. I have not tried these keys before, so can’t comment on how good they are. These are silent click, whereas the optical-mechanical on my Vissles LP85 may be a little noisy for use in public.
Battery
The keyboard has no backlighting, but this should improve the battery life. None of the marketing material mentions the battery life, so I will confirm this at a later time.
Price & availability
The Cherry KW 9200 MINI will be available from the 20th of March 2023 in the CHERRY store and in retail stores. The recommended retail price excluding VAT is £60.71. The scope of delivery includes the keyboard, a carrying bag, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and an extra small USB dongle for wireless operation.
