The Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi will be launching their latest mid-range phone on the 12th of March, as ever we have seen numerous leaks regarding the phone, with the most recent leak indicating what should be the full specification.

This will be the second phone to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G following the recent launch of the Realme 6 Pro. Both of these companies have been going head to head in the past year as the best choice for affordable phones in all categories, so how do the two new phones compare?

Currently, this comparison is based on leaked information on the Note 9 Pro, I will update it following the launch.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max could be this year’s true Pro model

Phone companies are using increasingly elongated names, having a Pro model isn’t good enough, and one current rumour is that there could be a Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. It is then expected that this would launch with an improved chipset, with the odds being likely it would be the first phone to feature the MediaTek Dimensity 800 chip.

CPU, RAM and Storage

The Realme 6 Pro uses the Snapdragon 720G, and it is almost certain than the Redmi Note 9 Pro will use the same. This chipset is very similar to the Snapdragon 730G launched last year which was in the Realme X2 and the Redmi K30.

The Realme starts off with 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage, then there are options going up to 8GB/128GB.

The latest leak for the Note 9 Pro indicates that there will be 4GB/64GB & 6GB/128GB options which would be a little odd as last years Note 8 Pro started at 6GB/64GB. Though this would make more sense if you vie this year’s Pro as a replacement of last years normal Note 8.

Last years Redmi Note 8 Pro used the excellent Mediatek Helio G90T. Interestingly, that chipset scored higher than the SD730G in many benchmarks, so we could, in theory, see lower performance this year.

The Realme 6 Pro and the Note 8 Pro can both expand their storage via microSD and I would expect the same to be true with the new Note 9 Pro.

Display & Dimensions

The Realme 6 Pro has a 6.6 inch IPS LCD display running at 1080 x 2400 pixels with (0Hz refresh rate and 120Hz touch sensing. It has a dual punch-hole selfie on the upper left and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro is tipped as having a 6.67″ FHD+ 20:9 LCD Gorilla Glass 5 Display. Redmi recently demoed an in display fingerprint scanner for LCD panels so it would seem likely they will launch this on the Note 9. Due to the backlighting of an LCD, this has been hard to achieve, so it will be interesting to see how accurate the new tech is.

The Note 8 Pro had a 6.53 inch LCD display running at 1080 x 2340 pixels with a dewdrop notch.

Camera

The Realme 6 Pro has:

  • 64 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/1.72″, 0.8µm, PDAF
  • 12 MP, f/2.5, 54mm (telephoto), 1/3.4″, 1.0µm, PDAF, 2x optical zoom
  • 8 MP, f/2.3, 13mm (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm
  • 2 MP, f/2.4, 22mm (macro), 1/5.0″, 1.75µm

Then on the front it has a dual punch hole featuring:

  • 16 MP, f/2.1, 26mm (wide), 1/3.1″, 1.0µm
  • 8 MP, f/2.2, 17mm (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm

Last years Note 8 Pro had:

  • 64 MP, f/1.9, 26mm (wide), 1/1.72″, 0.8µm, PDAF
  • 8 MP, f/2.2, 13mm (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm
  • 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro), 1/5.0″, 1.75µm
  • 2 MP, f/2.4, (depth)

This then had a single 20MP f/2.0 wide selfie lens.

Currently, it is believed the Note 9 Pro will have 48MP main, 8MP Ultra-Wide, 5MP Macro & Depth Camera. Again this would back up the notion that this is more a replacement for the Note 8 rather than the Pro model.

Battery

The Realme 6 Pro has a 4300 mAh battery with 30W charge, then the Note 8 Pro had 4500 mAh battery with an 18W charge.

The Note 9 Pro is believed to come with a 5020mAH Battery and 18W Charging.

Price

The Redmi Note 8 Pro is the only phone currently available in the UK, and it sells for £210. Currently in India the Note 8 Pro is  rs.13,999.00 for the 6GB/64GB model.

The standard Note 8 is £153.05 and in India, on Amazon, it is rs.10,499.00 for the 4GB/64GB model

The Realme 6 Pro has only launched in India so far, at rs.16 999 which works out as £178. There is no word on UK price or availability, but I expect it to launch soon.
