Back in November, I reviewed the Soundcore c40i and came away very impressed. I later gave them to my partner, and she loved them. She continues to wear them as her main earphones.

These clip-on or cuff-design earphones have boomed in popularity in recent years. The clip design is comfortable, they fall out less easily than the open-fit in-ear earphones, and they provide environmental awareness, making them useful for anyone using them outdoors. This environmental awareness has made them particularly popular with women (which is a depressing reflection of our society).

The Soundpeats Pearl Clip Pro were launched back in January, and with an RRP of £60, they comfortably undercut the Soundcore c40i, so how well do they compete?

Features

Soundpeats Pearl Clip Pro Design 5

The PearlClip Pro is designed to provide a secure, comfortable fit while keeping you aware of your surroundings. With a lightweight construction of only 5.85 grams, its ergonomic open-ear clip design ensures stability and eliminates pressure, even during high-intensity activities. The device is crafted using 70% skin-friendly liquid silicone and nickel-titanium memory wire, making it suitable for extended use. This thoughtful design prioritises both comfort and environmental awareness, catering to individuals with active lifestyles. Unlike traditional in-ear models that focus on isolation, the PearlClip Pro strikes a balance between sound quality, style, and user comfort.

High-Quality Audio with Dual Magnetic Drivers and Dynamic EQ

The PearlClip Pro is equipped with 12mm dual magnetic drivers featuring a combination of PU and nickel-plated diaphragms. These components work together to deliver a powerful and clear sound profile. The enhanced magnetic strength ensures crisp high notes, smooth mid-tones, and a deep, resonant bass. Additionally, dynamic EQ algorithms further optimise the bass output, resulting in a balanced and immersive audio experience that keeps users motivated during workouts or other activities.

Innovative Directional Sound Design

A standout feature of the PearlClip Pro is its advanced directional hole design, which channels sound directly into the ear canal. This targeted approach minimises sound leakage and maximises clarity, ensuring that every detail of the audio reaches the listener with precision. Whether you are listening to music or engaging in a call, the directional design provides a private and focused auditory experience. The result is uninterrupted sound quality that allows for full immersion.

Convenient Charging with Auto Channel Adaptation

The PearlClip Pro’s charging case is designed for ease of use, allowing the earphones to be placed in any slot without worrying about orientation. Once the lid is closed for 10 seconds, the earphones automatically adjust their left and right channels, ensuring a seamless listening experience. The fast-charging technology offers added convenience, providing up to 2 hours of playtime with just 10 minutes of charging. This feature ensures that the earphones remain ready for use, even with a busy schedule.

Design and Build Quality

Soundpeats Pearl Clip Pro Design 3

The Pearl Clip Pro sport a reasonably unique design that sets them apart from traditional earbuds. They feature a clip-on style that wraps around the ear, with the main speaker unit positioned just outside the ear canal. This style of earbud is starting to become quite popular as many people appreciate the comfort and envirometnal awareness they offer.

The earbuds have a sleek, dark gunmetal finish that gives them a premium look.

The build quality is solid, with a combination of shiny and matte materials. The main body is made of durable plastic, while the ear clip uses a flexible nickel-titanium memory wire covered in skin-friendly liquid silicone. This design allows the earbuds to adapt to different ear shapes and sizes.

Each earbud weighs just 6.1g, making them incredibly lightweight. Users may forget they’re wearing them during extended listening sessions. The IPX5 water resistance rating provides protection against sweat and light rain, making them suitable for workouts and outdoor activities.

The charging case is compact and pocketable, not much larger than cases for traditional in-ear earbuds. It features a USB-C charging port and a button on the front to check the remaining battery level. The case has a total weight of 47.34g including the earbuds, which is relatively light for this type of product.

Comfort and Fit

The Pearl Clip Pro’s open-ear design offers several advantages in terms of comfort. Unlike in-ear earbuds, they don’t create a seal in the ear canal, which can cause discomfort or pressure for some users. The clip-on style also eliminates the need for ear tips of different sizes.

Initially, putting on the Pearl Clip Pro may require some practice, but I found it easier than the Soundcore I previously reviewed. Additionally, there was no need to use any clip-on tips to improve the fit (none were included anyway). The earbuds are not labelled left or right, which can be confusing at first. However, they feature an intelligent design that automatically assigns the correct channel when placed in the charging case. This means users don’t need to worry about which earbud goes in which ear.

The flexible memory wire allows users to adjust the fit to their ear shape. Once properly positioned, the earbuds stay securely in place, even during light exercise. However, the fit may not be as secure as traditional in-ear designs for high-impact activities.

I have large ears and didn’t have any issues, and my partner has small ears and also had no problems with the fit. But, some users with larger ears may find the clip slightly tight, while those with smaller ears might experience some movement.

PeatsAudio App

The PeatsAudio app, available for both Android and iOS, extends the functionality of the Pearl Clip Pro. It offers several useful features:

  1. Custom EQ: Users can adjust the sound profile to their liking or choose from preset EQ modes for different genres.
  2. Control customisation: The app allows users to reassign the touch control functions.
  3. Firmware updates: Keeps the earbuds up to date with the latest improvements and features.
  4. Battery level display: Shows the remaining battery for each earbud and the charging case.
  5. Find My Earbuds: Helps locate misplaced earbuds using a combination of GPS tracking and a ringtone alert.

The app is user-friendly and adds significant value to the overall package. However, it’s worth noting that some users may prefer not to install additional apps for their audio devices.

Sound Quality

The Pearl Clip Pro are equipped with 12mm dual-magnetic drivers, which is quite large for this type of earbud. These drivers, combined with the open-ear design, create a unique listening experience.

The sound signature has a impressive level of bass for open fit earbuds, albeit, not as good as normal earbuds that seal the ear canal with silicon tips. The low-end is punchy and full-bodied, providing a solid foundation for most music genres. This bass-forward tuning works well in outdoor environments, helping to mask ambient noise without completely blocking it out.

Mids are slightly recessed in comparison to the bass, but still maintain good clarity. Vocals are well-defined and easily discernible, though they may lack some richness compared to more balanced earbuds. The upper mids and treble are reasonably forward, adding sparkle and air to the overall sound.

The soundstage is excellent, likely due to the open-ear design and treble emphasis. Instrument separation is good, with individual elements in complex tracks remaining distinct.

It’s important to note that the open design means there’s minimal passive noise isolation. While this is beneficial for situational awareness, it also means that bass response can be affected in noisy environments. I found that I needed to increase the volume in loud settings, which would impact battery life.

Additionally, while these may appeal to fitness fans, wind noise can easily drown out music and this is why bone conduction is so popular with runners.

Call Quality

The Pearl Clip Pro perform adequately for voice calls, though they may not match the clarity of earbuds with stem designs or those with more advanced noise-cancelling microphones.

In quiet environments, call quality is clear and natural. The open-ear design allows users to hear their own voice naturally, which can help prevent unintentionally speaking too loudly.

However, in noisier settings, the microphones may pick up more background noise compared to in-ear designs. This can make calls in busy outdoor environments or windy conditions more challenging.

Battery Life

The Pearl Clip Pro offer a respectable battery life for their size and price point. Each earbud contains a 35mAh battery, while the charging case houses a 350mAh battery.

On a single charge, the earbuds can provide up to 6 hours of playback time at 60% volume. The charging case extends this to a total of 24 hours of use before needing to be plugged in.

Charging times are relatively quick. The earbuds take about 32 minutes to fully charge, while the case takes approximately 3.2 hours. The earbuds also support quick charging, providing up to 2 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge.

These figures are competitive within this price range and should be sufficient for most users’ daily needs. However, heavy users or those who frequently listen at high volumes may find themselves reaching for the charger more often.

Price and Alternative Options

The Soundpeats Pearl Clip Pro have an RRP of £60 and at the time of writing, Amazon had them available for £48.

There are a growing number of cuff/clip-on open-fit earphones on the market, including:

  • Soundcore C30i which have an RRP of £60 and available or £46
  • Soundcore C40i, which are available for £100
  • TOZO OpenEarRing Open Ear are available for just £30
  • JLab Flex Open Ear Headphones are available for £50

Overall

The Soundpeats Pearl Clip Pro is an excellent option for those interested in open-ear earbuds. They provide a comfortable listening experience with good sound quality and a decent amount of bass for open-fit earbuds that work well in outdoor environments.

The flexible clip-on design seemed superior to the Soundcore 40i I have previously reviewed.

The companion app adds value with its EQ options and customisable controls, while the battery life is sufficient for most users’ needs. The affordable price point makes them an attractive option for those curious about open-ear designs but hesitant to invest in more expensive models.

However, they’re not without their drawbacks. As with all open-design earbuds, there is limited passive noise isolation, which may not suit all listening environments. While open-fit earbuds are popular with fitness fans, for things like running and cycling, there can be an intrusive amount of wind noise.

For users prioritising situational awareness, comfort, and a fun, bass-forward sound, the Pearl Clip Pro are well worth considering.
