Today OPPO announced their new flagship phone, the Reno Ace, alongside another upper mid-range phone the Oppo K5.

OPPO Reno Ace

The Oppo Reno Ace features 6.5-inch 1080 x 2400 pixels Full HD+ AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The display runs at 90Hz refresh rate with a sampling rate of 135Hz soon to be launched Realme X2 Pro.

Oddly, with this being a flagship and under the Reno brand name, there is a notch, whereas the previous flagship Reno, and the Reno2 all use the beautiful sharkfin style pop up. With both OPPO and Realme being owed by the same company I would expect this is exactly the same display on the X2 Pro.

The small waterdrop notch hides the 16MP selfie camera, and there is an under-display fingerprint scanner and dual firing speakers.

At the back, there is a 48MP Sony IMX586 main shooter, 13MP telephoto camera with 5x hybrid zoom, 8MP ultrawide unit and a 2MP monochrome sensor.

The latest Snapdragon 855+ chipset by Qualcomm powers the Reno Ace smartphone. The 2.96GHz octa-core processor chipset is coupled with up to 12 GB of RAM. The highest configuration model of the smartphone has up to 256 GB of UFS 3.0 storage. There is no external storage support on the device.

This will be the first phone to feature the new 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge technology making it the fastest charging phone available. This should allow the phone to go from 0 to 27% in 5 minutes and a full charge in 30 mins.

The Reno Ace runs Oppo’s ColorOS 6.1 on top of Android 10. Other notable features include a 3.5mm headphone jack, NFC and dual-frequency GPS.

Oppo also unveiled a limited 40th anniversary Gundam Edition Reno Ace. It has a special paintjob at the back in either red or blue and the company will offer special themed accessories for it.

Pricing

The Reno Ace will come in Psychedelic Purple and Starry Blue colours. The base 8/128GB model starts CNY 2,999 ($422/£343), there’s also a 8/256GB variant for CNY 3,199 ($450/£366) and a top spec’d 12/256 GB version for CNY 3,799 ($534/£435).

There is no word on the  Oppo Reno Ace Gundam edition pricing.

UK Availability

There is no word on UK availability. OPPO are holding the Reno2 event next week on the 16th of October, it is possible they may announce it then but it is unlikely.

The Reno2 was launched in China a month ago, so it is possible the same timeline will follow with the Reno Ace

Oppo K5

Along with the Reno Ace was the more affordable the Oppo K5 which is strikingly similar to the Realme X2, from what I can tell there is not a single different in spec.

This includes the display which is an AMOLED panel with an under-display fingerprint scanner. It’s diagonal is 6.4”, while the ratio is 19.5:9.

The chipset is the same Snapdragon 730G with the same RAM and storage options including 6GB/8GB then 128/256GB storage.

The camera? The same. Its a quad lens with a 64 MP main sensor with 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor.

And the battery is also the same at 4000 mAh with a 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0.

Oh yeah, OPPO and Realme use exactly the same OS too, so it is ColorOS 6.

Pricing

So with everything else being the same, what about the price? The K5 is launching at CNY1,899 (£220/€240/$266)

Pinning down the official price of the X2 is hard but it appears to be CNY 1,499 (£172/$210)

Realme were always the more affordable brand, and OPPO is more established so it is not surprising there is a price difference.

UK Availability

I am not sure if the K5 will launch in the UK, OPPO have only released a limited number of devices here, and the Realme X2 is definitely landing in Europe next week, so I am not sure OPPO will want to step on their toes.
