Yesterday, MediaTek announced two new 4G chipsets, the Helio G96 and Helio G85, which will be focussed on the affordable end of the market.
The Helio G96 is the most interesting of the two, and I will write a separate post for that one.
The MediaTek Helio G88 doesn’t warrant a long post dedicated to its specification, the TLDR would be that it is the same as the Helio G85, just with better camera and display support.
I am not sure if this upgrade requires any hardware changes at all, it sounds more like a firmware upgrade.
As always, with these MediaTek chipsets, it is not so much the specification that is important but the eventual cost of the devices using it. The MediaTek Helio G88 will inevitably be used on some very affordable phones that offer incredible value for money.
Key Features of MediaTek Helio G88 include:
- Brilliant 64MP main cameras
- MediaTek HyperEngine 2.0 Lite generation technologies
- Dual 4G VoLTE
- Integrated Voice Wakeup

What has changed?
The press release is a little thin on specifics, so it is possible there have been other changes. As far as I can tell you get:
- Camera support is improved up to 64MP
- Display support is upgraded to 90Hz @ 1080P+ (eg 2520 x 1080)
Then, the older chipsets used MediaTek HyperEngine, whereas this is listed as having MediaTek HyperEngine 2.0 Lite.
MediaTek HyperEngine provides intelligent resource management that ensures sustained performance and longer gameplay
No details have been provided on how HyperEngine 2.0 Lite is different.
The Helio G85, which launched in May 2020, previously offered a minuscule upgrade from the G80, which launched in February 2020, with a 50Mhz bump to the GPU frequency.
