With all the leaks surrounded the Huawei P30 Pro over the past few weeks, it is suprising nothing was ever leaked about the new Huawei and Gentle Monster partnership for glasses.
Towards the tail end of yesterdays announcment, Huawei through a curveball with the new announcement.
The new glasses are less like Google Glass and more akin to the Bose Frames, there is no display, but the glasses have a microphone and speaker built in.
Huawei x Gentle Monster appear to have solved the biggest problem with smart glasses, making them look like normal glasses with no ugly bulges.
Two of the most recent examples would be the Bose or the slightly different Snapchat Spectacles. The Snapchat Spectacles are just ugly and uncomfortable to wear. With the Bose, they look good from the front, but when you see the sides there is a huge bulge where the speakers are located.
Huawei’s implemntation of it is almost seamless, a passing glance and you would negver know these are smart glasses. The once concern is how good will they sound with such a discrete speaker?
Apart from the speakers, the glasses feature two microphones that allow you to accept calls from your phone, interact with a virtual assistant, and listen to music. There’s IP67 dust/water resistance, a 2,200 mAh battery, and similar to Snapchat Spectacles, Huawei’s glasses charge by placing them in the included carrying case.
The glasses are set for launch in July but there is no word on where they will be available for how much.
