Over the years, I have reviewed a large number of smart light products, with me eventually settling on Philips Hue for my house. It is an undeniably expensive ecosystem to choose, but they are arguably the best.
One brand I often mention as an alternative option in my reviews is Govee. They seem to have built up a great reputation as being an affordable smart lighting brand, yet I have never actually used one of their products.
They recently launched a range of new smart floor lamps and kindly got in touch asking if I would like to review one.
These new lamps are a little bit different from the likes of Hue. They released three new lamps:
The Govee Tree Floor Lamp has three spotlights for directional lighting.
The Govee Uplighter, arguably the most interesting, features a circular LED lamp at the top with the LED element positioned at an angle, creating unique lighting visuals such as rippling effects. Some of the blue lighting effects are not dissimilar to the northern lights.
Finally, the Torchiere Floor lamp, which I am reviewing today. This is a bit like a blend of the previous two models; it has three LED lamps angled upwards, which creates lighting effects on your ceiling. This effect is a bit light compared to what you achieve with the Philips Hue gradient lamp, such as the Signe Gradient Lamp, except that the lighting effect hits your ceiling more than the wall.
With features including triple-zone lighting control, music synchronisation, and smart home integration, the Torchiere aims to bridge the gap between functional illumination and atmospheric lighting.

Triple-Zone Lighting
The lamp utilises three independently controlled zones for colour blending, which produces dynamic flowing effects and rainbow-like patterns on ceilings. Its design allows for 330° horizontal rotation and a 60° vertical tilt, offering precise control over how light is distributed across walls and ceilings.
Music Modes
There are six music modes that use a built-in microphone, allowing the lighting to synchronise with music for added ambience during gatherings.
Smart Voice Control
Users can adjust brightness, colours, and modes using voice assistants including Alexa, Google Home, and Matter for hands-free operation.
Curved Lens Design
The advanced curved optical lens blends the edges of the three light zones for smooth colour transitions without dark spots. This design minimises shadows, ensuring even, consistent illumination across ceilings for uniform lighting effects.
Govee’s LuminBlend™ Technology
This integrated chip technology pairs high-quality LEDs with custom algorithms to output low-saturation, soft tones. The result is refined, smooth gradient lighting with accurate colour representation, making it suitable for both relaxation and professional interior use.
Triple-Segment Precision Control
Users can adjust the three independent light zones separately, allowing for tailored lighting whether setting the mood for a party, living room, or bedroom.
Tunable White Light
The lamp features adjustable colour temperature from 2,700K to 6,500K and offers a brightness of 780 lumens, adapting seamlessly to different times of day and user preferences.
DreamView Lighting Experience
The system provides advanced lighting effects for a visually engaging atmosphere.

A weighted base offers stability on multiple types of flooring and surfaces.
Easy Set-Up without Tools
Assembly requires no tools. Users thread the cable through the lamp poles, connect the poles to the base, and tighten them in place. The pole sections are also removable to enable height adjustment.
Unboxing and Design

The lamp itself is not the most attractive; it is just a big black pole, and the bean-shaped lamp head is a bit ugly, but this is all about the lighting effects. I’d say it is best to place it in a corner where the lamp itself is less visible.
The black aluminium pole measures approximately 1.7 metres in height, creating a substantial presence without overwhelming smaller rooms. The circular base, while weighted for stability, maintains a relatively compact footprint that works well in corner installations or alongside furniture.
The distinctive bean-shaped lamp head, which houses the three LED zones within a curved translucent diffuser, may appear unusual initially, it serves important functional purposes in creating the smooth, light-blending effect that defines the lamp’s visual character.
Build quality feels excellent. Govee may be affordable, but the assembled lamp feels premium, with smooth threading on the pole connections and a satisfying weight to the base. The single control button, positioned midway up the pole, provides basic on/off functionality but disappointingly offers no additional controls like brightness adjustment or scene switching.
Set Up
Initial setup begins with the physical assembly, which proves straightforward and tool-free. The modular pole design allows for easy transport and storage, while the screw-together sections create a rigid final structure.
The lamp is quite tall, which is likely deliberate, to allow the lighting effects to hit your ceiling for maximum impact. However, I suspect it would be quite easy to shorten it if needed. You should be able to remove a pole and then thread the power lead further out the base.
The smartphone app setup follows a similar process for smart home products and the initial Bluetooth identification and pairing is not dissimilar to Aqara and Xiaomi products.
The pairing process works smoothly, and I experienced no issues. Once connected, the app guides users through basic operation and introduces the main feature categories. The initial setup wizard helps optimise the lamp’s position and introduces key functions like zone control and scene selection.
Govee App and Settings
The Govee app serves as the primary control interface for the Torchiere, offering extensive customisation options beyond basic on/off functionality. There are extensive settings which reflects the lamp’s sophisticated feature set, though this can initially overwhelm new users.
The main control screen provides quick access to power, brightness, and preset scenes. A colour wheel allows immediate colour selection, while separate controls manage individual zone settings. The interface responds quickly to inputs, with minimal delay between app commands and physical light changes.
Scene management occupies a significant portion of the app, with 77 preset options organised into categories like Nature, Party, and Relaxation. Users can favourite preferred scenes for quick access and create custom scenes using the DIY mode. The DIY functionality allows precise control over colours, transitions, and timing, enabling the creation of personalised lighting effects.
The AI scene generation feature attempts to create lighting based on text descriptions or uploaded photos. Results vary significantly in quality, with simple requests like “summer sunset” producing reasonable effects while complex descriptions often yield unpredictable outcomes.
Music mode settings include sensitivity adjustment and microphone source selection. Users can choose between the lamp’s built-in microphone or their smartphone’s microphone, depending on the audio source location and desired responsiveness.
Timer and scheduling functions allow automated operation, including sunrise/sunset simulation and automatic scene changes throughout the day. These features work reliably once configured, though the interface could benefit from simplified scheduling options.
Integration settings cover voice control setup and smart home platform connections. The app walks users through the connection process for major platforms, though some advanced features remain exclusive to the Govee ecosystem.
Matter Integration With Home Assistant
I am happy that this has launched with Matter support, which allows you to integrate it with third-party ecosystems and allows me to get it to work in unison with Philips Hue via Home Assistant.
Through Matter, users can control basic functions including power, brightness, and colour selection. Scene activation works for simple preset modes, but complex custom scenes and zone-specific controls require the Govee app.
Music synchronisation and DreamView integration are not available through Matter connections.
The integration process requires enabling Matter mode in the Govee app and following standard Matter pairing procedures. Once connected, the lamp appears as a standard colour light entity with appropriate controls for most home automation scenarios.
Response times through Matter prove adequate for most applications, though not quite as immediate as direct app control. The added compatibility benefits outweigh this minor performance difference for users prioritising platform independence.
Performance


Lighting Quality and Output
The Torchiere’s 780-lumen output provides adequate illumination for ambient lighting applications. In comparison, the £250+ Philips Hue Signe Gradient Lamp claims to have a lumen output of 2,550 when the colour temperature is set to 4000K.
The upward projection creates soft, diffused light that reduces harsh shadows and creates a pleasant overall atmosphere. However, the lamp cannot serve as a primary light source for tasks requiring focused illumination.
Colour accuracy impresses, particularly for saturated colours and the warmer portions of the spectrum. The dedicated white LEDs produce genuinely white light rather than the slightly off-white typical of RGB-only systems. Cool whites appear crisp and neutral, while warm whites provide comfortable evening illumination.
The triple-zone system enables sophisticated gradient effects that work particularly well for atmospheric lighting. Sunset simulations and aurora effects create convincing natural lighting patterns, while more abstract colour combinations offer artistic possibilities.
Light distribution varies significantly with ceiling height and colour. White ceilings at moderate heights (2.4-3 metres) provide optimal performance, with even light spread and good colour mixing. Higher ceilings or dark surfaces reduce the effect’s intensity and visual impact.
Zone Control and Blending
Individual zone control functions precisely, allowing users to create asymmetric lighting effects or focus illumination in specific directions. The curved lens system successfully blends zone boundaries, eliminating harsh transitions between different colours.
The blending quality impresses most in gradual colour transitions, such as warm-to-cool white shifts or complementary colour combinations. More dramatic colour contrasts may show slight boundary lines, though these remain subtle enough to avoid disrupting the overall effect.
Response time for zone changes is quick, with minimal delay between app commands and visible light changes. This responsiveness enables real-time adjustment and experimentation with different colour combinations.
Music Synchronisation Performance
Music mode performance varies significantly depending on the audio content and environmental factors. Electronic music with clear beats produces the most satisfying synchronisation, with colour changes that genuinely complement the rhythm.
Acoustic music, classical compositions, and dialogue-heavy content yield less predictable results. The system may struggle to identify consistent patterns, leading to erratic flashing that detracts from rather than enhances the audio experience.
Microphone sensitivity requires careful calibration for optimal results. Too low, and the system misses subtle musical elements; too high, and background noise triggers unwanted light changes. The sweet spot varies with room acoustics and audio volume levels.
The built-in microphone generally outperforms smartphone microphone mode for music synchronisation, providing a more consistent response and better isolation from environmental noise.
Smart Home Integration Performance
Voice control works reliably for basic commands through Alexa and Google Assistant. Power control, brightness adjustment, and preset scene activation respond quickly and accurately to spoken commands.
More complex voice commands, such as specific colour requests or zone-specific controls, can be a bit hit or miss.
Matter integration provides solid basic functionality for users preferring platform-agnostic control. While advanced features remain unavailable, the core lighting functions integrate smoothly with most smart home systems.
App reliability is generally excellent with stable connections and responsive controls. Occasional connectivity issues may require app restarts or device power cycling, though these instances remain relatively rare.

The Govee Torchiere LED Floor Lamp is an excellent smart floor lamp for people seeking ambient up-lighting with advanced features at a reasonable price point. There are substantial customisation possibilities, triple-zone blending, and smart assistant flexibility, making it a practical fit for both modern and traditional UK homes.
While not a replacement for purpose-built task lighting, the Torchiere is effective as an accent piece for living rooms, bedrooms, or entertainment spaces—especially for users who prioritise mood lighting and integrated smart controls over direct illumination.
Looking beyond this product, Govee has an impressive product range, including traditional bulbs for your lights and semi-affordable GU10 spotlight. The product range focuses heavily on mood lighting for things like entertainment, including TV lights and gaming lights. The one area they are lacking in is ceiling lights, with just 3 options.
Overall, the Torchiere is an excellent smart lamp that is well-suited for smart home enthusiasts and those looking to expand their ambient lighting with something that goes beyond standard RGB options. Pricing is more attractive than Philips Hue, and it provides a unique ceiling lighting effect that the Hue product range lacks.
