AVM FRITZ!Box routers don’t get a lot of attention in the UK, but they are fantastic devices with a great feature set, including a telephone system for DECT, IP and analogue phones.
I am currently in the process of reviewing the FRITZ!Box 4060 WiFi 6 router and the FRITZ!Repeater 6000 WiFI mesh repeater, which should work well in the UK market. However, AVM is presenting new hardware at MWC that UK buyers are unlikely to be able to use
The new FRITZ!Box 5590 is designed to work with the growing number of FTTH connections (fiber-to-the-home). Its key selling point is the SFP slot which will come with two SFP modules for active (Active Optical Network, AON) or passive networks (Passive Optical Network, PON) transmit a maximum of 1 Gbit/s.
However, there will also be an SFP+ module produced, which will be able to handle connections up to 10 GBit/s.
The router then has a single 2.5GbE port plus three Gigabit ports. It then has Wi-Fi 6 with a 4×4 radio and up to 80Mhz channel support, which will mean clients can connect at 1,200 MBit/s, though 2,400 MBit/s total throughput is possible.
The reason why it is unlikely we will see this in the UK is that ISPs can lock you into their own hardware, whereas in Germany, it is the law to be able to use whatever router you want. Currently, Zen are the only company using AVM, and they provide the FRITZ!Box 7530.

At the international industry event MWC 2022, taking place from 28 February to 3 March, the Berlin-based communications specialist AVM will present the current product generation for DSL, cable and 5G – as well as a premiere for fiber optics. “The Smart Wi-Fi Experience”, AVM’s slogan for this year’s MWC, sums up the benefits of FRITZ! products: FRITZ!Box models and Mesh Repeaters bring fast internet and long-range Wi-Fi to any connection and into every home. This makes any task child’s play, from entertainment to working from home.
This also characterizes the FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber, which is premiering at the MWC: With its SFP module, the new fiber flagship is suitable for all standard fiber optic connections throughout Europe and distributes speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, wirelessly via Wi-Fi 6 (4 x 4) as well as via a 2.5-gigabit LAN port in the home network. The FRITZ!Box 6690 Cable, which also offers high gigabit speeds with low latency, will also be at the MWC. In addition, the new premium model for cable internet is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 (4 x 4) and 2.5 Gigabit LAN. For DSL, the FRITZ!Box 7590 AX is available, which gets the most out of DSL networks with 35b supervectoring and Wi-Fi 6. With the FRITZ!Box 4060, AVM is presenting a Wi-Fi 6-capable tri-band wireless router that is ideal for connecting to a fiber optic or cable modem. In addition to the powerful, intelligent Mesh Wi-Fi and a 2.5 gigabit WAN port, the wireless router in this product category is the first to have DECT integrated for the use of Smart Home devices and telephony. With the FRITZ!Box 6850 5G, AVM is presenting a versatile all-in-one home network router for use in all European 5G networks – standalone and non-standalone.
