At CES 2020, Intel announced that they will be introducing the new 10th Gen Comet Lake-H series line-up with options for the Core i9, Core i7 & Core i5 family. The new CPUs will run at  45W TDPs and would feature even higher clocks than before with the Core i7 options hitting 5.0 GHz+ clocks and possibly higher with the Core i9

Similarly, AMD announced the new 3rd Gen Ryzen 4000 CPU family including low-power 15W & high-end 45W SKUs, offering up to 8 cores and 16 threads. These new CPUs will be based on the latest 7nm Zen 2 cores, offering greater IPC performance and higher clock speeds. The new APU for these chips is also based on the 7nm fabrication process and AMD claims that they are  2 times more efficient than the current 12nm Zen+ parts.

Geekbench 4 Listings – Unfair Comparisons

New Geekbench listings show results for a CPU from each team, with the Intel Core I9-10980HK and the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U

To be fair, these are not like for like comparisons, the Intel CPU is their flagship while the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U sits somewhere in the mid-ground. It wouldn’t normally be a comparison worth making, but the results came out at a similar time and they are both for the same version of Geekbench. It does, however, show a lot of potential from AMD.

The AMD listing was for an unnamed Lenovo laptop. While the Intel result is for a completely unknown laptop.

Intel Core i9-10980HK Vs Core I9-9980HK

the flagship Core i9-10980HK which boasts 8 cores and 16 threads. The Core i9-10980HK comes with a 45W TDP and features a base clock of 3.10 GHz with a claimed boost of over 5.0 GHz. The chip will feature 16 MB of L3 cache, a UHD 630 graphics chip and will support DDR4 memory.

In comparison, the Intel Core I9-9980HK has a base clock of just 2.40 GHz

The Intel Core I9-10980HK achieved 5531 for the single-core score and 31470 for multi-core. Compared to the Intel Core I9-9980HK this is a 4% improvement over its single-core score of 5261 and 15.7% improvement for the multi-core score of 27192

This would put the Intel Core i9-10980HK performance just over the desktop-based AMD Ryzen 5 3600X for multi-core results.

AMD Ryzen 7 4700U

The AMD Ryzen 7 4700U isn’t really that competitive with the Intel Core i9-10980HK which is to be expected, this is an 8-core 8-thread CPU running at 15W vs the 8/16 and 45W of the Intel.

The base frequency of this CPU is listed as 2.0 GHz while the max boost is 4.1 GHz.

In the single-core result, the AMD manages to score 4910 while in multi-core it achieves 21693. This would put the intel 12.6 and 45% ahead.

Comparing it agains the Core I9-9980HK used previously, things are a little closer with the Intel CPU being 5.7% out in front for the single core, and 21% with multi-cire.
