Design and Port Availability

The River 3 maintains the familiar, compact design that is ideal for those on the go. At around 30% smaller than average power stations in its category, it is easy to store and carry, a crucial factor for camping enthusiasts or those with limited space.
On the right-hand side of the River 3, there are two AC outlets with a total 300W rated output. These are sufficient for small to mid-range appliances, including coffee makers and other light devices, making it a practical choice for both outdoor adventures and home emergencies. There is also a USB-C output capable of providing up to 60W, which is ideal for charging laptops or other USB-C compatible devices, alongside two USB-A ports for additional versatility.

The EcoFlow River 3 Plus, an enhanced version of the River 3, features more robust specifications, such as an additional AC outlet and a total 600W output capacity, which allows it to handle heavier loads or provide power to more devices simultaneously.
The inclusion of GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology for power efficiency is a standout feature of this series. It allows the unit to enhance power output for low-wattage devices, offering extended runtime compared to older silicon-based alternatives. This is especially beneficial for appliances such as routers and LED lights, which can run for more than 30 hours.

EcoFlow App and Control Options

One of the strengths of EcoFlow power stations is the app integration. The River 3 is no different; it allows users to remotely monitor and control the device via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. This feature is convenient for those who prefer having control over the charging and power output without needing to be directly next to the unit.
The app provides various control options, including the ability to customise the low battery warning, set backup percentage levels, and even schedule specific charging tasks. These features add a lot of convenience and usability, especially for users who plan to use the device in a remote setting and want to optimise power usage.
I have personally used this feature a lot with the Delta 2 and the 100W Flexible Solar Panels as I attempt to run my garage off solar power. Once the battery hits 10%, the Delta 2 switches to AC charging. It is a great feature that makes EcoFlow power stations much more versatile than power stations without an app with similar features.
Performance and Charging Capabilities
AC and Solar Charging

The River 3 features a fast AC charging capability that allows it to go from 0% to 100% in about one hour, which makes it one of the fastest in its category. This quick-charging function is facilitated by EcoFlow’s “X-Stream” technology, which is built to minimize downtime.
For solar charging, the device can, in theory, reach full charge in approximately 2.6 hours using a 110W solar panel input. This is a relatively efficient time frame for solar charging and makes the River 3 ideal for extended outdoor trips where access to traditional power outlets may be limited.
It hasn’t been particularly sunny where I live recently, so only did limited tests with it, but it works as advertised as long as you have realistic expectations of what a solar panel can generate.
USB-C and Car Charging
The River 3 supports USB-C charging with a 100W maximum output. This feature is handy for modern devices that increasingly rely on USB-C power delivery, allowing fast charging for compatible gadgets such as smartphones and tablets. The device also supports car charging, which is useful for those who need to top up power while on the road.
During my testing, the 100W output was accurate, but I would have liked to see a second 100W port as this small portable power station is best suited to devices that run on USB-C such as laptops, phones, and flashlights.
Unfortunately, the River 3 does not support USB charging input. While I wouldn’t regard this as an essential feature, it was nice to have. I have a lot of USB-C chargers so there may be times where I would need to charge the power station but lack a AC power lead.
Port Peak Output and Use Cases
When it comes to power output, the River 3 doesn’t shy away from delivering consistent results for small appliances. It can power devices like laptops, mobile phones, LED lights, and even small appliances like the Alpicool K25 25 Litre Portable Car Fridge. However, it does fall short of being able to power high-demand devices over extended periods.
The River 3 Plus can accommodate more demanding appliances thanks to its expanded AC output. The 600W surge capacity and the ability to use EcoFlow’s “X-Boost” technology help to briefly extend power capacity beyond the standard 300W limit, which is especially useful for devices that have a high startup wattage.
Battery Expansion and Versatility
The River 3 Plus also has a unique ability to expand its battery capacity by connecting additional batteries (either the EB300 or EB600) with a maximum capacity of 858Wh. This is facilitated through wireless Pogo pin technology, which simplifies the setup by eliminating the need for additional cables. This feature is a game changer for users who want a flexible power solution that can adapt to different scenarios, from home backup to outdoor use. Additionally, the extra battery provides more USB-C output options, which adds convenience for those with multiple devices.
UPS Feature and Switch Speed
The River 3 also functions as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which ensures that connected devices can run without interruption in case of power failure. It has an auto switch-over time of less than 20 milliseconds, which is effective for keeping small appliances like routers, IoT terminals, and security cameras operational during brief power outages.
The River 3 Plus takes this a step further with a faster switch-over time of less than 10 milliseconds, making it suitable for more sensitive equipment, such as desktop computers, network-attached storage (NAS), and gaming consoles.
I have used the River 3 with my desktop PC, and the UPS switching was fast enough that the computer carried on running without any problems.
Noise Level and Heat Management
One of the underrated aspects of portable power stations is how noisy they can be during operation. The EcoFlow River 3 excels in this regard by operating at noise levels below 30 decibels, making it quieter than a typical library. This low noise level is especially important for people who plan to use the unit indoors or during camping, where a peaceful environment is preferred.
The River 3 also incorporates a well-designed heat dissipation system with side vents, which ensures the device remains cool even during fast charging. This attention to thermal management helps maintain efficiency and battery health over time.
Most of the time I used it, I didn’t hear the fan kick in but my typical usage was low load. When it charges, the fans do eventually kick in.
Price and Alternatives
The EcoFlow River 3 has an estimated retail price of $259, though it was available for as low as $159 during Amazon Prime Day, making it a compelling option for those in search of a deal. The price point places it in direct competition with similar products from other brands, such as the Jackery Explorer 240 v2 and the Bluetti AC21.
For alternative options, you have:
- Jackery Explorer 240 v2 – £259 RRP – Available for £169
- EcoFlow is 1% smaller by volume
- Bluetti AC21 – £229 RRP – Listed at £169 (sold out)
