The charging landscape has become increasingly complex as our devices demand more power whilst we expect greater portability. Ugreen’s Nexode Retractable Series attempts to address these competing demands through three distinct products that share a common design philosophy: built-in retractable cables combined with high-power outputs.

Design and Build Quality

The Nexode power bank measures 146×54×50mm and weighs 550g, making it noticeably larger than standard 20,000mAh units. The additional bulk stems from the integrated retractable cable mechanism, which adds both height and complexity to the internal layout. The device features a matte black finish that resists fingerprints effectively, though the plastic construction feels somewhat hollow compared to premium alternatives.

The retractable cable extends to 0.65m with seven preset length positions, allowing users to adjust the cable length without excess slack. The magnetic retention system works reliably, keeping the cable flush against the device when not in use. However, the cable feels slightly thinner than standalone USB-C cables, raising questions about long-term durability despite Ugreen’s claims of 25,000 retraction cycles and 10,000 bend tests.

The TFT display represents a standout feature, providing real-time information about input/output power, battery percentage, and estimated charging times. The screen remains clearly visible in various lighting conditions and adds a premium feel that justifies the higher price point. Four rubber feet on the base prevent sliding on smooth surfaces, a thoughtful touch for desktop use.

Performance

Ugreen Retractable Nexode Power Bank 20000mAh Review 5

The power bank delivers on its 165W total output promise, though this figure requires careful interpretation. The retractable cable can output up to 100W, whilst the additional USB-C port matches this specification. The USB-A port provides 22.5W, adequate for smartphones but limiting for tablets requiring higher power delivery.

Real-world testing reveals impressive charging speeds. A MacBook Pro 13-inch charges from 20% to 80% in approximately 45 minutes when using the retractable cable alone. The device maintains relatively cool temperatures during high-power operation, with surface temperatures rarely exceeding 40°C even when outputting maximum power. This thermal management represents a genuine strength, particularly compared to competing products that throttle performance or become uncomfortably warm.

The 20,000mAh capacity provides practical all-day power for most users. Testing shows approximately 1.3 full charges for a MacBook Air, 3.8 charges for an iPhone 15 Pro, or 2.1 charges for an iPad Pro 11-inch. These figures align closely with Ugreen’s specifications, suggesting honest capacity ratings.

Charging the power bank itself takes approximately 2 hours when using a 100W charger, though this requires a separate cable as the retractable cable cannot be used for input. This limitation feels like a missed opportunity, particularly given the emphasis on reducing cable clutter.

Price and Alternatives

The Ugreen Nexode Power Bank 20000mAh 165 W has an RRP of £80 but is already discounted to £60.

There is also the 120W model, which is £70 RRP, discounted to £50.

It has a few alternative options from decent brands:

Anker Laptop Power Bank (25K, 165W, Built-In and Retractable Cables) has an RRP of £90 and is available for £70 – This has two cables, one retractable and the other in a loop, acting as a carry loop. It then has a USB-A port and USB-C.

Baseus Power Bank, 20,000mAh Portable Charger with Built-in Retractable USB-C is available for £50, but this only has a single retractable cable and a single USB-C port with a maximum output of 65W

INIU Power Bank with Built-in USB-C Cable, which has an RRP of £40 and is available for £30. This only has 45W output and 27W input.

Design and Practicality

The 65W wall charger adopts a more conventional form factor, measuring similar to standard GaN chargers but with the addition of the retractable cable mechanism. The 195g weight feels substantial without being cumbersome, and the matte finish matches the power bank’s aesthetic. The retractable cable extends to 0.69m with eight preset positions, offering slightly more flexibility than the power bank version.

The fixed UK plug design represents both a strength and weakness. Whilst the robust three-pin plug provides excellent connection security, the inability to fold the pins makes the charger less travel-friendly than competitors. The pins protrude significantly, adding bulk and creating potential snagging points in bags.

The magnetic cable retention system works effectively, though the cable occasionally requires gentle persuasion to seat properly. The cable thickness matches the power bank version, maintaining consistency across the product line whilst raising similar durability questions.

Charging Performance

The 65W output proves adequate for most laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Testing with a MacBook Pro 13-inch shows charging speeds comparable to the original 61W adapter, whilst smaller devices like iPhones and iPads charge at optimal rates. The GaN technology keeps the charger relatively cool, though it runs warmer than the power bank during sustained high-power operation.

The single retractable cable limits simultaneous device charging, though the additional USB-C and USB-A ports provide flexibility. Power distribution follows standard protocols, with the charger intelligently allocating power based on device requirements. However, using multiple ports simultaneously reduces the power available to each device, potentially slowing charging speeds for power-hungry laptops.

Price and Alternatives

The 65W Ugreen Nexode with retractable cable is priced at £40 but at the time fo writing ti was already discounted to £28 on Amazon.

There is a 100W model due out soon, priced higher, I’d estimate at £48 based on the hint from the Ugreen website.

The 45W model is £25

There are quite a few computing options from random brands, and it is just as well Amazon has already discounted the Ugreen:

  • Canyon OnPower 600 is available for £60 and can do 65W, and has a retractable USB-C cable and a separate USB-A and USB-C port
  • Blynt 65W USB C Fast Charger with Retractable Type C Cable is available for £27
  • TOPADRE 65W Retractable Wall Charger, which also has wireless charging, is available for £25

Ugreen Nexode Car Charger 145 W with Retractable USB-C Cable

Specification

  • 100*135*41mm Size
  • 0.7m Cable Length
  • 8 Cable length Preset
  • 1*USB-C Retractable Cable Cable Type
  • 2*USB-C Port Charging Ports
  • 1*USB-A Charging Ports
  • 100W (C2) Max Single Port Output
  • 145W Max Total Output

The car charger is the most interesting product of the three, as I am not aware of any other car charger with such a high-power output.

The 100×135×41mm dimensions fit comfortably in most cigarette lighter sockets, though the retractable cable mechanism adds noticeable bulk compared to standard car chargers.

The 0.7m retractable cable provides adequate reach for front-seat passengers, though rear-seat access may require extension. The eight preset length positions allow fine-tuning, preventing excess cable from interfering with driving controls. The magnetic retention system works reliably, though road vibrations occasionally cause the cable to shift slightly.

Performance

I drive an old Corsa with no technology in it at all, so I have done my best to give myself modern amenities with a Technaxx TX-320 Wireless Car Play & Android Auto Display, which is then plugged into an Anker Soundcore Boom 2, and I have a Vantrue Element 2 Dual Dash Cam.

This set-up presented some problems for the car charger, as the Technaxx and Vantrue don’t accept a charge from USB-C.

This isn’t really a flaw of the Ugreen, but you need to be mindful about what you intend to use the car charger for.

However, for devices that can accept higher charge rates over USB-C, this is ideal. I have charged power banks, laptops, phones, and even a portable power station while I have been driving to call-outs for clients. It has helped me keep my important electronics topped up on long days on the road.

Price and Alternative

The 145W Ugreen Nexode Car Charger has an RRP of £40

The 90W model is £26

The 60W model is £30

While the high-power output makes this unique, there are quite a lot of alternative options with relatively high-power outputs:

I wasn’t aware that Ugreen already had a reasonably powerful charger. There is a 3-port 130W charger with two USB-C ports and a USB-A port. This has an RRP of £25 but is available for £17.

The LISEN Retractable Car Charger has a 69W total output and includes a USB-C and Lightning cable, plus a single USB-A and single USB-C port for just £15.

Overall

As someone who is always on the move with ADHD, I love the idea of having a charging peripheral with built-in cables. It is one less thing for me to lose/forget.

Ugreen145W Nexode Car Charger

I’d say a retractable cable is less important for me on a car charger, but I can appreciate that the retractable design helps keep cable clutter down when not in use. The main selling point here is the 100W output from the cable, allowing you to charge laptops and phones fast. This would likely make this very appealing to anyone who is on the road a lot for work.

Ugreen 65W Nexode Charger

The 65W Nexode Charger is again great for keeping cable clutter down, something my partner appreciates, as my couch is cluttered with various USB-C cables.

I feel like this would have made the perfect travel plug, so it is a bit of a shame they have not made the prongs foldable like

Ugreen 20000mAh 165W Nexode Power Bank

This is a superb power bank for me, and I used it on a recent holiday. While a 20000mAh power bank is a bit big to carry in pockets, it is fine in a bag and has proved incredibly useful for long walks and bike rides while away. The retractable design is a big help in keeping the bag as compact as possible, and it is far less messy when trying to charge a device when out in public, as you only need to extend the cable as much as you need.
