Acer Predator Triton 500 SE Review – Flagship laptop gaming performance in a subtle style

This year Acer has launched two special edition laptops with slightly different form factors than the generic 15.6″ and 17″ they typically use. The Acer Predator Triton 300 SE was their first foray into the smaller format 14-inch gaming laptop niche, a category that doesn’t have much competition, and I loved it. The Triton 500 … Read more

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti & 3070 Ti set to launch on 31st of May – Making gamers even more bitter about GPU shortages

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti has been rumoured for a while now. First, it was being launched, then it was cancelled, now it is definitely being launched. It feels like this is going to cause a huge backlash from the gamer community and at this point I don’t think Nvidia really gives a damn. … Read more

Gigabyte AORUS 15G YC RTX 3080 Gaming Laptop Review – The best solution for PC gaming in 2021 (or until the GPU market improves)

The Gigabyte AORUS 15″ is the gaming focussed range from the laptop brand, offering an FHD 240Hz display with a variety of GPU and Intel CPU options.

With the launch of the RTX 3000 series GPUs, there are options ranging from £1600 with the RTX 3060 up to £2700 for the 17-inch model of the laptop I am reviewing today, with a GeForce RTX 3080.

Gaming laptops have never offered the best value for money for PC gamers. However, at the time of writing this review, the only consumer desktop GPUs available to buy on Scan are the GeForce GT 1030, GT 730,  GT 710, GT210, none of which are much use for gaming.

So anyone looking for new hardware to game on right at this minute has no option but to buy a laptop (or get screwed by scalpers on eBay).

GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q vs RTX 3080

Nvidia and the brands using the GPUs are a little sneaky with the RTX 3080 GPU term. A laptop GPU is generally not the same as a desktop GPU; while it uses the same technology, the GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q you find in this laptop has a boost clock of 1245 MHz with a  maximum graphics power of 105W.

The full-fat desktop RTX 3080 variety has a base clock of 1440MHz, boosting to 1740MHz with a TDP of 320W.

While this may be obvious to keen PC gamers/PC enthusiasts, it is probably less so to someone just getting into gaming or a parent buying a child a laptop.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 with 20GB, RTX 3060 with 8GB & RTX 3070S with 16GB could land this year – so don’t stress about your missed RTX 3080 pre-order

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 didn’t exactly go as smoothly as people would have liked, stock sold out almost instantaneously. It would seem like a short supply from Nvidia combined with a significantly greater demand than usual has caused this, potentially leaving people with weeks to wait. However, the RTX 3070 launches next month, as … Read more

Cheap Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cards get listed on eBay with RTX 3080 & RTX 3070 upgrade hype

Graphics cards surprisingly hold their value well, which make the ever-increasing cost of a new GPU a little more bearable. Even my old GTX 1070 which I bought for £370 in 2016 looks like it will sell for £150-ish, so £220 for 4 years of gaming is a bargain if you ask me. With the … Read more
