Today, Huawei has introduced a new model to their MateBook 13 series. Previously the two available options used the lates 10th Gen Intel chips with the options being i5-10210U or the i7-10510U.

The new model comes at a much lower price point while offering similar CPU performance, but falls a little behind for gaming and editing due to the Intel models having a discrete GPU.

With the much more attractive pricing, this looks like a great ultrabook.

Currently, only the 256GB model of the Huawei MateBook 13 AMD 2020 is listed, and this is for £649.99 plus you get a free Huawei MediaPad T3 10 2+16G Space Gray

The i5-10210U with 8GB/512GB is £899.99 also with a free tablet

Then the i7-10510U with 16GB/512GB is £1199.99, again with a free tablet

Intel i5-10210U vs AMD Ryzen 5 3500U

Depending on what you plan to do, the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U could potentially offer more performance. The CPU of the Intel is generally for single core CPU benchmarks, but AMD is is better for multi-core. The Intel models have the benefit of the GeForce MX250 discrete GPU

The following benchmarks are not from the Huawei models but should represent the rough performance difference.

In Cinebench the Core i5-10210U is a faster by 15% on the single-core with 412 vs 359, but then falls behind by 16% on multicore with 1301 vs 1512.

Then in Passmark the Intel is again ahead by 28% for the single-core with 2300 vs 1797 but the AMD is ahead by 19% with the multi-core result with 1797 vs 7858.

With the GPU, the Intel models can take advantage of the discrete GPU, so while the iGPU of the Intel is not very good, these laptops will out perform the AMD models in gaming.

In the Division 2 the Intel/MX250 combo is reported as scoring 47fps vs 41Fps when running on low settings at 1280×720.

For Far Cry New Dawn, again on low at 720P, the MX250 gets 32fps vs 29fps.

Then in Apex legends, with the same settings, the MX250 manages 58fps vs 50fps.

Huawei MateBook 13 vs Matebook D 14

When I first saw this press release, I assumed it was a refresh of the Matebook D that was recently launched and has been particularly popular.

The Huawei Matebook D 14 already uses the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor and comes in at a lower price point of £649.99. However, as the name suggests, this is a 14-inch laptop but measures 214mm x 322mm x 159mm and weighs in at 1.38KG.

The Huawei MateBook 13 is quite a bit smaller at 211mm x 286mm x 149mm and weighs 1.3kg. It then also has a higher resolution display running at 2160 x 1440 and a higher screen to body ratio of 88% vs 84%.

Smaller and lighter laptops normally come with a high price premium, so this only being £50 more is quite impressive.
