Wi-Fi 7 Promises Major Upgrade
Wi-Fi 7, also marketed as Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 by industry body Wi-Fi Alliance, is the forthcoming evolution of Wi-Fi standards. Compared to the currently prevalent Wi-Fi 6/6E, Wi-Fi 7 introduces major performance upgrades:
- Speeds up to 3x faster than Wi-Fi 6 – theoretical peak speeds exceed 30Gbps
- 320MHz wide channels for more bandwidth
- Advanced modulation for improved spectrum efficiency
- Multi-link operation using 5GHz and 6GHz simultaneously
- Latency reduced to 1ms for time-sensitive applications
This combination unlocks new possibilities for wire-free communication in homes, enterprises, industrial settings and public spaces.

Filogic Wi-Fi 7 Chipset Family

Underpinning MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 7 product portfolio is its Filogic line of Wi-Fi 7 chipsets.
Announced last year, the Filogic 7 series spans flagship 880 and 860 platforms down to more affordable 380 and 360 solutions. This range allows device makers to integrate Wi-Fi 7 into everything from high-end consumer routers and smartphones to mass-market smart TVs, streaming sticks and home gateways.
Having this variety of certified chipsets is key to quickly achieving critical mass adoption of Wi-Fi 7.
First Certified Devices Showcased
MediaTek has been working closely with Wi-Fi Alliance on certification testing. This has enabled its partners to rapidly deliver the first group of interoperable, reliable Wi-Fi Certified 7 products.
Devices on show encompass IP cameras, residential gateways, mesh systems, smart displays, TVs, streaming devices, smartphones, tablets, laptops and more.
Partners with certified Wi-Fi 7 products include Asus, Buffalo, Hisense, Lenovo, Lumen Technologies, TCL and TP-Link. Many devices are expected to launch commercially this year.
Real-World Benefits
So what benefits will consumers see from these first Wi-Fi 7 devices?
- Faster local networking – Large downloads and file transfers will complete in seconds rather than minutes.
- Smoother video streaming – There’s ample bandwidth for multiple high resolution video streams around homes.
- Cloud gaming – Wi-Fi 7 reduces controller latency for responsive cloud gaming.
- Immersive AR/VR – With speeds up to 30Gbps and sub-1ms latency, Wi-Fi 7 can transmit bandwidth-hungry virtual worlds smoothly without wires.
- Enterprise innovation – Businesses will benefit from huge wireless bandwidth between devices, users and business applications.
- Future-proofing – Consumers investing in Wi-Fi 7 routers and devices are future-proofing their connectivity for the next generation of smart home gadgets and bandwidth-intensive applications.
“Consumers demand fast, reliable and always-on Wi-Fi connectivity for their applications, and Wi-Fi 7 devices powered by MediaTek will deliver superior quality and drive Wi-Fi innovation to new heights,” said Maxine Moreau, President of Mass Markets at Lumen Technologies, one of MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 7 partners.
So while Wi-Fi 7 is still in its infancy, MediaTek’s progress with certification suggests high-speed wire-free networking is closer than ever before. The company is striving to make Wi-Fi 7 a reality not just for early adopters, but everyday consumers too.
