Battery Life
The Meross MS100FHHK sensor distinguishes itself from other smart sensors with its solar-powered design. The integrated solar panel collects ambient light to power the sensor, significantly extending its battery life. With sufficient ambient light, the sensor can operate without consuming any battery power, providing a truly battery replacement-free experience.
The solar panel activates when the ambient light intensity reaches approximately 350 Lux and remains stable during operation with a minimum requirement of 150 Lux. This allows the sensor to remain powered even in low-light conditions.
It’s worth noting that the Meross MS100FHHK sensor still has an internal battery to ensure continuous operation during periods of low ambient light. The CR2477 button battery powers the sensor when the solar panel cannot provide sufficient energy. The lifespan of the internal battery will depend on factors such as usage and the availability of ambient light. However, it is expected to last several years before requiring replacement.
This solar-powered design significantly reduces maintenance requirements and provides a more sustainable and eco-friendly solution compared to traditional battery-powered sensors.
My only gripe here is that the app doesn’t appear to show the battery life. I have placed my sensor near my window, so I doubt I will ever have a problem, but it would be reassuring to see what the battery life is. However, it is worth noting that Home Assistant does show the battery life and after almost a month of use, the battery life is still 100%.
Price and Alternative Options
The Meross MS100FHHK sensor is competitively priced at just £32 direct from Meross. It doesn’t currently appear to be available from Amazon.
The sensor by itself appears to be available for US buyers at $29.99.
There are plenty of alternative options out there any many of these are more affordable, but none of them have the solar charging.
The Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor is just £20 RRP.
The SwitchBot IP65 Indoor Outdoor Hygrometer Thermometer is a bargain at just £12.
