Honor are lining up their second big launch in less than 3 weeks. The Honor 30 arriving on April 15 and it is claimed that it will pack some of the key features of the recently Huawei P40 Pro at a lower price point.

GSMArena has reported that the new phone will come with a 50MP Sony IMX700-based camera, exact details have not been confirmed, but their source stated that it would be the industry’s largest Sony custom sensor. The Huawei P40 Pro already uses the largest  1/1.28″ 50MP sensor, and it is unlikely Honor will be one-upping Huawei, it is therefore expected they will be the same sensor.

A leaked image indicates a camera design not dissimilar to Huawei too, both with a large rectangular bump and three main cameras including a periscope telephoto lens. If anything I would say they are too similar, as the silver colour on the phone looks very similar to the P40 Pro I have in for review. The big difference is the camera modules are laid out in a different order, with the telescope lens being on the bottom on the P40 Pro.

Older leaks from @OnLeaks claimed that the two other cameras were 12MP Ultra-Wide (4in1 2. 8μm) + 8MP Telephoto Rear Camera with 3x Optical Zoom. However, a periscope lens would indicate 5x zoom. It could be that the Pro has a periscope and the standard model has 3x zoom.

GSMarena has tried to identify as much from the image as possible, including two holes at the top of the phone, one for a microphone and the other they think will either be an IR blaster or 3.5mm.

Recently it was claimed that the Honor 30 Pro had been caught out in the wild with someone using it in public inside a protective case. The phone had a very pronounced curve to the display, so it could be that Honor adopts the waterfall display of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. The photo also indicated a dual punch hold selfie which would likely be 32 MP f/2.2 1/2.8″ and TOF sensor to match the P40 Pro.

Last year the Honor 20 Pro and P30 Pro had a similar camera design on the rear, but that was about it. The P30 Pro was a big year for Huawei cameras being the first to introduce the new RYYB sensor and also their first phone with a periscope 5x zoom. The Honor 20 Pro had a 48MP lens, but with a smaller sensor, then its telephoto lens was 3x optical.

One thing is for sure; the Honor 30 series will land with the HiSilicon Kirin 990 matching the latest flagships from Huawei. The Huawei P40 series launched with the HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G variant, but there is also a lower specced 4G model which could be a possible option for the Honor phones. The recently launched Honor 30S was the first phone to feature the Kirin 820 5G chipset.
