Comparing the Legacy and New IMPACT 100 Headsets
The latest version of the IMPACT 100 headset introduces several thoughtful updates that address comfort, functionality, and modern connectivity. While the legacy model was reliable and widely adopted in professional environments, the new version builds on its foundation with a series of ergonomic and technical enhancements.
Comfort and Design Improvements
The legacy headset featured a basic plastic headband with foam ear pads, which although functional, offered limited comfort for prolonged use. In contrast, the new IMPACT 100 is significantly more user-focused. It includes an ultra-lightweight design, a soft-touch surface on the headband, and adjustable sliders for a more personalised fit. The foam ear pads have been replaced with soft, durable leatherette cushions, and the earcups are now mounted on ball joints for improved flexibility and comfort during extended wear.
Enhanced Microphone and Audio Features
While both versions feature a noise-cancelling microphone, the newer model uses an upgraded version with enhanced noise suppression. It also introduces a 270° adjustable boom arm, allowing users to wear the microphone on either the left or right side – a subtle but useful addition for varied work styles.
Connectivity and Controls
A key improvement lies in connectivity. The legacy version was USB-A only, limiting compatibility with newer devices. The new model includes both USB-C and USB-A connectivity via an adapter, making it more versatile for modern workstations and laptops. The control unit has also been redesigned, with more intuitive call and volume controls, and certain variants include a dedicated Microsoft Teams button for seamless integration with the platform.

Unboxing

The IMPACT 100 arrives in environmentally conscious packaging that balances protection with sustainability. The box contents include the headset, carry pouch, USB-C to USB-A adapter, quick guide, safety guide, and compliance documentation.
Build quality is OK It is a budget headset, so it feels a bit lightweight compared to some of the more advanced models.

The USB-C to USB-A adapter is a welcome inclusion that addresses compatibility concerns with both legacy and modern devices.

Set Up / EPOS App
There is not really anything you need to do to set these up; they are plug and play. You can, optionally, install the EPOS software, and this allows you to adjust the sidetone settings and upgrade the firmware.
The plug-and-play functionality works reliably across different operating systems and UC platforms. Windows recognises the device immediately, and audio routing is handled automatically. macOS and Chromebook compatibility is equally seamless, with no additional configuration required for basic functionality.
The EPOS Connect software installation is optional but recommended for users who want access to firmware updates and basic customisation options. The software package is relatively lightweight and doesn’t significantly impact system performance.
In Use
I had very low expectations of the Impact 100, not only is it a budget headset, but I really didn’t think I would get on with a headset sitting on my ears. I struggle with hearing people (or making out their accent) on the phone a lot of the time, and background noise easily drowns out things for me.
However, I was pleasantly surprised. The audio quality doesn’t seem quite as good as the EPOS Impact 400 I have been using the past few months but there is good clarity with voices.
The on-ear design, whilst initially concerning, proves comfortable for extended periods. The lightweight construction prevents the fatigue commonly associated with heavier headsets, and the leatherette earpads provide adequate comfort without creating excessive heat buildup.
Voice clarity during calls is consistently good, with the microphone effectively capturing natural speech patterns whilst filtering out most background noise. Colleagues report clear audio quality even in moderately noisy environments, though the noise cancellation isn’t as comprehensive as found on premium models.
Subjectively, the volume seems louder and the volume controls on the cable are great. I find this location far superior to being on the headset itself.
The in-line controls prove more convenient than expected, with the cable-mounted position allowing for easy access without reaching up to the headset. The tactile button design makes it possible to operate controls by feel, which proves particularly useful during video conferences.
Music playback through the headset is adequate for casual listening but lacks the depth and richness expected for dedicated music consumption. The frequency response is clearly optimised for voice communication rather than multimedia content, which is appropriate given the headset’s intended purpose.
Battery life concerns are eliminated entirely due to the wired design, though this does mean accepting the mobility limitations that come with a tethered connection. The 2-metre cable provides adequate reach for most desk setups whilst remaining manageable.
Price and Alternative Options
The EPOS Impact 100 an RRP of £45 and comes in multiple variants
- Impact 100 MS Stereo USB-C+A
- Impact 100 UC Stereo USB-C+A
- Impact 100 MS Mono USB-C+A
The EPOS Impact 460T has an RRP of £80 but is available for around £45-50 from various retailers.
The Impact 860T has an RRP of £110 and is available for £70, and this has ANC built in, which is a major selling point.
For alternative brands, you have:
Jabra Evolve 20 for around £33, but it has foam earpads
Jabra Evolve2 40 for around £70
Plantronics Poly Blackwire 5220 for around £55, which benefits from a USB-A, USB-C and 3.5mm jack connection
Overall
I am a bit of a snob, especially when it comes to technology, so I had low expectations of this affordable headset, but I have come away surprisingly impressed with it.
Yes, it is a basic, no-frills headset, but it does the job it is intended to do well.
The IMPACT 100 succeeds in delivering professional-grade voice communication at an entry-level price point. Whilst it lacks the advanced features and premium materials found on higher-end models, it provides reliable performance for its intended use case.
I have always been opposed to headsets that sit on your ear. I often struggle with background noises, making it difficult to hear people, but I didn’t experience any noticeably worse performance than the Epos Impact 400.
The on-ear design concern proves largely unfounded in practice. The lightweight construction and comfortable earpads make extended wear feasible, whilst the open design allows for better environmental awareness compared to closed-back alternatives.
Audio quality doesn’t seem to be quite as good as the Impact 400, but clarity was just as good. They also seem to go louder, which is important to me when I have a difficult-to-hear client on the phone.
The volume advantage proves particularly valuable for users who frequently deal with poor phone connections or soft-spoken callers. The additional headroom in maximum volume output provides flexibility that many competing models lack.
I prefer the controls on the cable to those on the headset itself; I find I am much more likely to use them.
The in-line control preference highlights an often-overlooked aspect of headset design. Cable-mounted controls prove more accessible and intuitive than headset-mounted alternatives, particularly during video conferences when visual attention must remain focused on the screen.
The build quality, whilst adequate for the price point, doesn’t match the premium feel of more expensive models. The plastic construction and basic cable design may not withstand heavy abuse in demanding environments.
For users seeking an affordable, reliable headset for regular voice communication, the Impact 100 represents solid value. It delivers on its core promise of clear voice transmission and comfortable wear whilst maintaining compatibility with major UC platforms.
