Metal War Online 1

Not everyone has the hardware to play Cyberpunk 2077, or even cares about it.

If you are using older hardware, or just want something free and easily accessible to play in 2021, there are plenty of excellent choices.

With Adobe recently killing off Flash (and you shouldn’t have been using Flash for years), many browser games are now dead, unless you run the outdated Flash.

Metal War Online

Metal War Online

I’ve listed this first to show that now all browser games have to be low quality. This multiplayer shooter game is one of the best multiplayer options on the internet. The game requires players to race and fight opponents, thus combining the components of both the genres of games.

DHTML Lemmings

chrome LYklqL9GDy

DHTML Lemmings is a recreation of the original lemmings, so the graphics are not the best but it is full of nostalgia and it is still a fantastic game to play (and kill time).

BrowserQuest

BrowserQuest

BrowserQuest is a free massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by Little Workshop and Mozilla Foundation. Characters explore the world and plunder its treasures as well as an in-game chat system to speak with other players

The game has spawned many spin offs too, such as WTF?! Adventure and Kaetram.

Infinite Mario Bros

Infinite Mario Bros

I am not sure how this has managed to stay online with the litigious nature of Nintendo. Infinite Mario Bros is a semi-randomised and theoretically endless platformer

The difference from the original Mario Bros is when you finish a level, you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get next.

FreeCiv

FreeCiv

Civilisation is one of my favourite gaming franchises, ever. FreeCiv brings some of its time killing addictiveness to the web with a pen Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilisation.

As ever, you start out with an explorer and some workers, searching a map and dealing with other clans (by way of diplomacy or fisticuffs). Your ultimate aim: spreading yourself across the world – ideally via domination rather than in a more literal sense with your innards.

You can play in single-player or multi, and there are some games running with up to 80 players. You can then play games with 2D or 3D graphics.

Game of Bombs

Game of Bombs

Game of Bombs is a clone of the much loved Bomberman and add is massively multiplayer action to make it even more fun. As always, you run about, set bombs to take out walls and monsters, get away from the bombs so they don’t blow you to pieces, and collect whatever’s found in the retro carnage. The difference here is in the giant maps, and being able to bomb (or team up with) people from all over the world.

DOS Games  – Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Mortal Kombat, & Prince of Persia

chrome 3AEqg39jES

Originally, I was going to list a Doom game, but the one I found was in Flash. Then I cam across JS DOS. This is a popular website that allows you to run DOS games using a  JavaScript library. The main website is geared more towards development, but they have games available on dos.zone.

Games available, include the ever-popular Doom, also its sequel Doom II, then several others including Wolfenstein 3D, Mortal Kombat, Prince of Persia, Golden Axe, Out of the world, and Earthworm Jim.

Dragon Tavern

dragon tavern

If you want to go a bit more old school, Dragon Tavern is a  a Text-browser RPG where you explore the world,. and get killed. A lot. If you’re lucky you may even discover your own corpse from time to time.

It is quite a relaxing game to play, it is good to play a little bit each day. Sadly the community behind this game is now dead and the game is no longer being developed.
