Yesterday Microsoft held a preview event for Windows 10 and it came with a lot of big news, I will be discussing some of the latest Windows 10 features and some of the hardware announced in a following post. But one of the big takeaways from the event (of which there were many) was that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users for 1 year after its launch.

Microsoft appear to be copying Apples approach and view the operating system as a service.

Microsoft hasn't decided how it will handle upgrades after the first year, so it is advisable that you do upgrade as soon as possible.

Windows Phone devices will also be upgraded free of charge.

There is no word on a specific release date, just sometime this year.
