Synology DS214play Announced: Capable of 1080p full HD video transcoding

Synology todat has introduced the new DiskStation DS214play, a two-bay NAS server designed to serve as a full entertainment suite.

Optimised for multimedia processing, the DS214play is tailored to users’ needs for high-quality video streaming, photo, and music sharing, while keeping all other aspects of NAS uncompromised.

The DS214play features 1080p full HD video transcoding on the fly, and supports a wide selection of formats allowing users to watch their media on any device they might have within the home.

Powered by a 1.6 GHz dual-core CPU, the DS214play delivers read/write speeds of over 110MB/s and 100MB/s respectively under RAID 1 configuration, it also has 1Gb of RAM. The unit is extremely power efficient using just 11.5 watts and 28.74 watts respectively during HDD hibernation and in full operation.

The unit can also has a SD card slot, one eSATA, and 2 USB 3.0 ports. The drive bays are front mounted, tool-less and hot-swappable.

The OS on the unit it the fantastic DiskStation Manager which we have blogged about before, which includes plenty of utilities such as the download station, which allows you to download torrents and NZBs directly to the device itself.

There is no word on pricing yet but we expect it to cost over £300
