I am a terrible sleeper so I am always on the quest for new things to try to help my partner or me get a better sleep. I am a very light sleeper, and very sensitive to sound, even the slightest electrical hum will cause me sleep anxiety. I also occasionally snore which then wakes me up, and my partner is not particularly fond of it either. So I have been quite excited to find out about a new product called QuietOn.

QuietOn aims to help alleviate the suffering of people across the globe that have to put up with the snoring of their partner with the QuietOn Sleep which is could be the ultimate antisnoring/stop snoring aid.

They are a unique company that specialises in the development of active noise cancelling earplugs. These are not designed for music, or any audio, they just cancel noise. Active noise cancelling uses a microphone to sample the sound, and a speaker to create a phase-shifted sound that cancels the original noise. With the QuietOn products, they sample the sound within the ear canal, giving them the most accurate solution possible.

The QuietOn sleep are earplugs for sleeping that have been developed from the ground up just for this use. They are designed with soft earpads, with a full in-ear design and are super lightweight. The noise cancelling system is tweaked to focus on low-frequency sounds which snoring primarily creates. So you don’t have to keep taking them out when your partner speaks to you, QuietOn has built in a function that allows you to switch on the hearing mode by double tapping the earbud.

In comparison, the old-fashioned earplugs you may have worn in the past that are foam or other materials use passive attenuation to reduce the sound, which is just the blocking sound getting in there. These tend to be good at blocking high-frequency sounds, but they are poor at blocking low-frequency sound, especially below 500 Hz. The result of this is the deep drone on a snore is still very audible. The QuietOn option will use both passive and active cancellation providing optimal noise reduction across the whole audible spectrum giving you the best earplugs for sleeping.

During the development of the QuietOn sleep, some poor engineers were forced to listen to hundreds of audio tapes including sounds of snoring, traffic and other noises coming through walls, to create the golden standard of active noise cancellation to suppress the sounds disturbing your sleep.

The result of this work means that QuietOn claims to be able to achieve over a 30 dB drop in sound over frequencies going up to 1Khz and total noise cancellation for frequencies higher than this.

Unfortunately, snoring affects 25% of people in the U.S. on a regular basis and over 50% on an occasional basis. People in the US also only get an average of 6.8 hours sleep, over an hour less than recommended, if you then combined this with the regular disruption of snoring you could be chronically deprived of sleep.

The long-term effects of sleep deprivation can be far worse than just feeling a bit tired. Lack of sleep causes hormone changes within your body and can be associated with weight gain. For men, these hormone changes include reduced testosterone which will promote fat gain, reduced sex drive and can cause an overall feeling of lethargy and depression. Reduced sleep will also affect the way your body releases insulin and will, therefore, put you at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

Several studies have also stated that the effects of sleep deprivation cause the same sort of impairments as drink driving, and you are much more likely to be involved in a car accident.

Overall, getting enough good quality sleep is one of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is also something many athletes strongly advocate, throughout my fitness journey it has become apparent that good sleep is just as important as the nutrition and training you do, as your body needs to restore fully,

Unfortunately, these are not available for review yet, but I have been promised a sample, and I will be doing a thorough review as soon as possible. The QuietOn Sleep is available to pre-order on Indiegogo for just $159 witch expected shipping in October, that works out about £118. QuietOn also develops 2 other noise-cancelling earphones, one for day to day use which is great for dealing with noise on planes or travelling, and another designed for dentists.
