In recent years, one of the big improvements in home surveillance is the availability of cameras that can record video at night in full colour

Starlight Vs Darkfighter

Darkfighter is specific to Hikvision cameras and these are able to provide full-colour images up to 0.002 lux, and black and white up to 0.0002.

Starlight is a term that has been adopted by many other brands to indicate colour night vision, in these cases, they are nearly always using the Sony Starvis range of sensors. The quality of these sensors varies so starlight cameras can fit multiple budgets.

H.VIEW Security Camera 5.0MP

I have this camera and it is good, it is not perfect, but colour video is in my opinion much more useful for trying to identify potential thieves or other problems that may occur on my property. I have had issues getting this to work on my Ezviz NVR, for some reason it can only pick up the lower quality sub-stream. However, I am migrating to Blue Iris and that has had no issues.

Annke 5MP Colour Night Camera

Cheaper than the H.View currently, but the same 5MP colour night vision specification. After being impressed with the 4K Annke camera I have ordered this one to compare against the H.View. Annke have some incredibly affordable NVR packages too, you cna get four of these cameras, an NVR and a 2TB drive for less than £350 with the voucher applied.

Hikvision DS-2CD2385G1-I 8MP DarkFighter

This is probably the best low light/colour night vision camera you can buy at a reasonable price.

Reolink Argus 2 Wireless 1080P Camera

This is NOT a POE camera and it won’t work with most NVRs as it does not have ONVIF. However, the Reolink Argus 2 is one of the only wireless cameras I am aware of with colour night vision and the low light performance is excellent.

Dahua Dome Camera Starlight 2MP 1080P

Dahua is a frequently recommended brand for IP CCTV cameras. 2MP and 1080P probably won’t provide the best quality of footage but it costs under £60 and if you want basic surveillance in a low lit area this could be worth considering.

Anpviz Starlight 2MP

This is probably not going to be the best but it is one of the cheapest available. It is ONVIF so will work with almost any NVR and many mobile apps
