The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is coming to the end of its yearly cycle, and they will almost certainly announce the Snapdragon 865 at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii towards the end of the year.

Details are starting to emerge about the new system on chip, as well as some information about its successor, the Snapdragon 875.

For the Snapdragon 865, Qualcomm will be switching from TSMC and using the Samsung 7nm EUV process, which is the same as the Exynos 9825 which is featured on the Samsung Galaxy Note10.

This time around, there will be two variants of the chip known as Kona and Huracan. One version will have an integrated 5G modem and the other will stay as 4G. The current Snapdragon 855 has an integrated 4G modem and then requires a separate X50 5G modem.

It is likely the X55 modem will be used which can connect to 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks, unlike the older X50.

Both chips should share the same features for everything else, this includes support for LPDDR5X memory – an upgrade from the existing LPDDR4X RAM standard – and the new UFS 3.0 storage tech recently seen in the OnePlus 7 Pro for faster data transfer speeds.

Earlier this month, Ice universe revealed some initial benchmarks for the Qualcomm Kona SD865 that were done on Geekbench. The new Snapdragon 865 achieved a single-core score of 4160 and multi-core score of 12946.

This is a moderate improvement from the previous generation, The Qualcomm Reference device for the SD855 scored 3518 and 11178. In real life, the OnePlus 7 Pro scores 3402 and 10943.

Following on from the Snapdragon 865, current reports suggest that Qualcomm will move back to TSMC and use their 5nm+ fabrication process
