Huawei is doing a good job of acting like there are not political issues affecting the company. They are out in full force as usual for IFA 2019, where will be finding out about their latest flagship system on a chip, the Kirin 990.

Chipsets announcements are not always the most exciting, so they have some products to launch too. This includes the new Huawei Watch GT 2, which I think is one of the best looking smartwatches on the market.

It has not been made official yet, but accurate product images have been leaked, it is a similar design to its predecessor keeping the aviation-style design, which I love.

The Huawei Watch GT 2 is codenamed “Latona” and has the model number LTN-B19. There are a number of design changes such as a slimmer bezel, a larger display, and a thinner frame.

It is worth noting that Huawei uses what they call Lite OS compared to the more featured WearOS you find on many smartwatches. This is both good and bad, making the watch more of a feature watch that smartwatch, you will be restricted to what apps Huawei develop for the watch.

The advantage of this is that the original Watch GT boasts a battery life of 2 weeks, which is comparable to what you would find on the sports-orientated Garmin watches such as the Fenix 6. I have not had a chance to review one of these yet, so I can’t comment on how good it is compared to WearOS, but I find the smartwatch functions of Garmin more than enough for me, so anything extra would be fantastic. The problem with WearOS is the requirement to charge daily, which I find almost unbearable.

The watch keeps its heart rate sensor as well as a GPS module. New additions are a speaker and a microphone, hinting at an on-board AI Assistant and or the ability to make calls. There is no info on an LTE modem, but this is increasingly common with smartwatches.

The Huawei keynote is being held on Friday at 10:30am Berlin time, so 9:30am UK and the watch will almost certainly launch then.
