Some early benchmarks have been released for the new Huawei Mate 30 Pro that was launched on Thursday.

These are for the none 5G model, so using the slightly lower specced Kirin 990 chipset and lands the phone in between phones with the Snapdragon 855 and the newer models that use the 855+ chip.

This result makes sense, while Huawei has branded the new chipset as a 990, it would have perhaps been better off named as the Kirin 985 (which was previously leaked) due to its familiarities with the current Kirin 980.

One thing that was not announced at the launch was what storage the phone used, due to this, I was concerned that they may still be using the older UFS2.1, but, AnTuTu believes that the Mate 30 Pro is equipped with UFS 3.0 storage, with AnTuTu 8 favouring phones with faster storage.

Currently, the Black Shark 2 Pro and Asus ROG Phone II occupy the top 2 spots (both S855+ phones), the OnePlus 7 Pro (with S855) is losing its third position to the Huawei flagship.

It is the 5G model that is more interesting, this should be the chipset that represents the best performance that Huawei has to offer, and we will see if the decision to use the A76 processor over A77 was a good idea.

Furthermore, I have to question how much CPU/GPU performance we need from a phone nowadays, with most software catering for the lowest common denominator. Huawei appears to be putting a lot of focus on the AI parts of their chipset, and the new chipset looks like it offers more than double the performance from previous generations.
